On February 26, 2012, a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a man named George Zimmerman. George was found not guilty in July of 2013. President Obama spoke upon the ruling of this case. “It could have been me 35 years ago” stated Obama. Most African Americans went through being followed in the stores, hearing the doors on the car lock as they passed by, or had a woman move her purse closer to her as they walked in the elevator.
One of the most well-known examples of the racial profiling is a case of Trayvon Martin. This horrible event happened in February 2012 when seventeen years old boy Trayvon was shot by the neighborhood watch head George Zimmerman. Analyzing the words of Blow, Zimmerman’s perception of Trayvon Martin reflects pervasive stereotypes about the criminality of black people. Thus, the tension between police and African-American has a long history. Nowadays, news and mass media feed public with continuous stories of crimes that became an integrant part of black males characteristic.

During this time period there had been several robberies in the area. So, instead of waiting for backup from the police, Zimmerman approached Martin on his own and questioned him. There was soon an altercation between the two and Zimmerman eventually shot the teenager. When the police arrived on the scene, Trayvon was already dead.

Martin’s death led to a dispute between the state of Florida and George Zimmerman. Prosecutors in this case accused Zimmerman of racially profiling Martin. The defense took the position that George Zimmerman was using self-defense to protect himself from harm’s way.

Racial discrimination affects the way Americans think about race violence and relations, and should be eradicated as soon as possible. Besides Trayvon Martin’s death, there have been several occurrences of race violence in America. One such event was the death of Michael Brown Jr. at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson.

Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed on August 9, 2014 by Darren Wilson, a white police officer, in Ferguson, Missouri. The shooting prompted protests. When it was announced that Officer Wilson would not be indicted, the announcement set off another wave of protests. Not all police officers are dishonest and abuse their power but It 's obvious that today 's community of people has a suspicion of officers true intentions. The idea of cops and cameras has been around for a while but ever since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown the debate on whether police officers should be required to wear body cameras has been the center of attention.
The most famous one being Eric garner from New York, in 2014. Eric was a victim of racial profiling and died in the hands of the police. “The 43-year-old died while being placed under arrest for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. A cell phone recording captured the asthmatic father of six repeatedly saying ‘I can’t breathe!’ while being placed in a chokehold.”
