There are many literary devices used across stories. Color imagery is one of these literary devices that is used when colors give objects a symbolic meaning. In the short story “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell, girls who have been raised as wolves are thrust into the unknown as they are forced to adapt to human society. Their childhood was spent living with wolves, however they are taken in by nuns of St. Lucy’s who attempt to assimilate them into the human world through different phases. Throughout the story, color imagery is used to emphasize the key theme of unity, establish the conflicted tone, and metaphorically develop Claudette’s character.

People with physical or mental disabilities were also the lead of discrimination during this period. They were subjected to various forms of hate on their intelligence or strength. People during the 1930s didn't make their lives easier, in contrast, they made those minorities' lives even worse.
This is probably one of the most famous sequences in The Wizard of Oz (1939). In minute nineteen of the film, it is the moment in which the Technicolor world is revealed, merging the black and white (or sepia) world with the coloured one. Thus, depicting the change from black and white to colour film (both metaphorically and literally) there is no wonder that this film will attempt at a wide exploration of colours. In this essay I will explore the usage of colours in The Wizard of Oz, attempting to show how colours are used for different purposes and how their meanings can be changed.
Everyone has a favorite shirt, they adore the way the color complements their skin tone or 1their hair or eyes. Maybe the shirt is even their favorite color, or a mix of colors. Since people have been wearing clothes, painting pictures, or decorating their homes and objects; colors have been involved. The blending of dyes and the mixing of pigments creates beautiful patterns and expresses people’s personalities and emotions. The use of color plays a big part in the story The Great Gatsby by F. Color also assists the reader in separating the different countries and areas while being able to easily identify the groups that live there. The story puts great emphasis on the color "Yellow". It not only describes the infamous "Yellow Brick Road" traveled by Dorothy and her friends throughout the story, it was the color of land belonging to a group called the "Winkies". The Winkies were nice, kind timid people who lived in the country to the west, they were forces to listen to the Wicked Witch of the West, until they were released from bondage.
The use of lighting and filters for colours is not just used for simple illumination but it is more meaningful. It helps to understand the characters and focus our attention on certain objects and actions. The colour can be used as a motif, an occurring manifestation in which the shades themselves become an important part of the story, reflecting emotions, altering situations and underlining scenes. In The Wizard of Oz by Victor Fleming, 1939, specifically during the beginning scene, Dorothy was in sync with the setting. Dorothy was in the proper placement of the props around her, adding to the feelings of her reflecting the place she is in. The background eluded to the idea that she is far away from the golden spherical instrument that 's supposed to hold a globe, on the window sill in the background. There 's also an interesting painting below the window sill, it 's a golden band of boxes; this could be the representation of how Dorothy is gonna get to where she 's going, the yellow brick road. However, the crystal ball seems to be the most prominent part of the scene, the contrast of Dorothy 's position enhanced the feeling to the viewer that Dorothy is scared and alone.
As mentioned before, Perrault gives his readers the opportunity to learn from his version of the tale as to how to avoid such encounters in life. He, describes what his intentions towards Red is and how children can relate and learn from Red, as we can be attractive and obedient beings but we must also know our instinct and worth before you fall prey to someone’s bad intentions. Therefore, declaring that his version from an oral folktale to a literary fairy tale is much more true-to-life in the sense that what had happened to Red in the end can occur in real life and this fairy tale could help a child one day understand the moral behind why we must not talk to strangers and/or be promiscuous.
The first eighteen minutes of the movie along with the opening credit are black and white. This gave a nostalgic feel to the film. As Oz (the main protagonist) was in his hot air balloon, he was caught up by a storm, travels a long way and arrives to a magical land that happens to be called Oz, a place glowing with colour. The move from high contrast to shade was not moment. In the first place the sky turns into a bit blue, took after by the scene out of sight appears tinted and gets brighter.
The Wizard of Oz has revealed to be an exceptionally well thought out film when analysed. The film has made use of stylistic elements such as colour, light, sound and mise-en-scene which coincide with the various twists and turns of the plot as Dorothy moves from Kansas, to Oz, and back again. In The Wizard of Oz, the directors have employed the use of different unique editing techniques despite being an early film. It is obvious that the audience is able to notice the absence of colour in the beginning and ending of the film. The audience is able to identify the mood and overall feeling for Dorothy when she is in her family farm in Kansas.
