What is resilience? According to the American Psychological Association (APA), resilience is, “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress”. There are many ways to show and build resilience one way is to find purpose. Instead of just sitting around and doing nothing, try and go out and help others. Maybe you can’t overcome your stress right now, but you can try and distract yourself by helping those around you. Another way that you can build resilience is to embrace healthy thoughts. It can be hard to pull yourself out of a rough spot if your mind is always negative. So you can reflect on what’s worked before and learn from the past. A great example would be the character of Beowulf. In the epic poem, Beowulf shows his resilience by finding purpose by helping others. In their time of need, Beowulf came to the rescue to save the people of Herot by defeating the monster Grendel. Later in the poem, Beowulf is challenged by another foe, a dragon. But he maintains a positive outlook and remembers the past, “he had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all of its courage or strength, for he had kept often going in the past, through perils and ordeals of every sort, after he had purged Hrothgar's hall, triumphed in Heorot and beaten Grendel” (Beowulf). For example, the character of Victor Frankenstein from Marry Shelly’s Frankenstein doesn’t show a lot of resilience. Victor does show that he is a very smart man, he goes on to create human life again after death. But after he does accomplish this task, he lets his creation ruin him. He becomes very depressed and doesn’t do anything about it. Instead, he shuts himself out and becomes very distant from his family and friends. At the end of the novel, Victor tells his story to Walton, the captain of a ship. In his last moments Victor tells Walton, “I have myself been blasted in these hopes, yet another may succeed” (Victor Frankenstein). Previously Victor had cautioned Walton about the risks that come with ambition, but with this line, he takes back what he said. Showing that through all of the struggles that he has gone through, Victor hasn’t really learned anything. Which is the opposite of what a resilient person is. Someone that is resilient shows that they can adapt and learn from their mistakes and they can become a better person. Victor died a lonely and depressed man because of the things that he did, and they wouldn’t have happened if he had just shown
