Resilience is often defined as being the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from setbacks, also known as toughness, however, I believe resiliency is to take the most negative aspects of life and try to see them through a positive point of view. In regards to resilience, two important traits embody resiliency as a whole, these terms that come to mind are hopefulness and adaptability. Adaptability is being able to identify and respond to new opportunities, threats, and challenges flexibly and effectively. This helps to build resilience by reducing the impact of negative events and increasing the ability to recover from them quickly. Vladek the main character can survive the concentration camp and rebuild his life after the war, which is a daunting task to put it lightly. Furthermore, Vladek's son Artie´s ability to document his father's story and share it with others serves as a symbol of hope and the possibility of healing and understanding. In Maus by Art Spiegelman a theme of adaptability, a predominant characteristic of resiliency is consistently present throughout the novel. The characters demonstrate adaptability in a multitude of ways, specifically the Jewish prisoners in the concentration camps, including the author's father, who is forced to adapt to the dreadful conditions of the camps to survive. Additionally, the characters also show adaptability in their ability to rebuild their lives and identities after the war, which many were not able to achieve. The main character Vladek showed incredible adaptability by being able to adjust to a new life in America following being a survivor of the Holocaust. Ultimately Vladek can rebuild his life, but how his past haunts him cannot be ignored. In general, the theme of adaptability is expressed through the characters' ability to survive and make the best of the difficult situations they find themselves
