Back in the 1500’s, times back then were pretty much the same as times are now. There was plenty of racism war, and conflict going on during this time which led to a lot of sacrifices being made. In Othello, written by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare uses Othello as a prime example of sacrifice when it comes to his status, love, and those around him. Othello is a man of bravery and valor and would sacrifice anything for his people and those he loves. Othello also displayed his jealous side in the novel as he also sacrifice the one person he loved with all his heart. He absolutely loves those that are close to him. Before his mother died she had given him her handkerchief which was the last thing she ever gave to him and he held that close to his heart for as long as he can remember. He loved his mother and that handkerchief was very close to him. But the thing that actually showed his love was the fact that he was able to sacrifice, or in this case surrender, that handkerchief to someone he absolutely loved with all his heart, Desdemona. He entrusted the handkerchief to her as a symbol of their love for one another and trusted her to keep that with her for as long as they live with one another. The trust and love he had for Desdemona was so much that he was able to give her the last thing his mother gave to him which in this case also led to his downfall with him getting angry at Desdemona because he thought that she had given the handkerchief to Cassio when in all clarity she didn’t. Othello had so much love for her that he was able to sacrifice his rank and image to others by marrying Desdemona despite what others were saying about him. Everybody was talking bad about Othello because he had married a white woman. Even Desdemona’s father hated the fact and he had loved Othello despite him being of color. Brabantio took the case to court and claimed that Othello had used magic to get Desdemona to fall in love with him although that was not the case. Othello
