Debate-written Assignment, Conformity The idea of conformity is to eliminate individualism and to unite the society together, making it a safer place for the citizens to live, and develop in. The government trying to make every thing completely fair is actually unfair to people who can 't get any excitement in a world like this. Limiting peoples thinking will also strongly slow any advances in technology, maybe even to a stop, so they might never solve some of the very important problems they face. Same with strength, if someones is in danger to an animal or a malfunctioning machine they will need to be able to escape. So really a world thats completely fair is impossible to create.
Outline Imagine being chosen a job for a lifetime, but this job had a lot of pain, and loneliness. Well that what it was like for Jonas. In the book,everyone has the same attribute’s but one twelve year old boy named Jonas. Throughout the novel,Jonas has suffer and has been misunderstood. If there was no sameness then the community would be a mess. It is because if a person chooses their spouse wrong then they will have to live with them for the rest of their lives. It is also the same when getting a job, if they pick their own jobs and they pick bad then they’ll be stuck with that job until their death. The elders think that sameness is good but Jonas is not happy. Jonas thinks that all people should have their own voice so that they can decide what they can do.
Jonas hates how his society decides to keep memories a secret from everyone. Jonas remarks: “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” (Lowry 154). Jonas feels that memories, whether it be good or bad, should be shared with everyone.
Jonas is not allowed to tell his dreams to anybody and if he has them he has no one to talk to about it. He can not take the medicine for the dreams either and constantly has the dreams. True freedom is commonly defined as absolute choice; whether it is in thought, actions or speech, freedom is an individual’s ability to take control of their lives and enables the human experience. Civilization views freedom as an ideal, yet the means of achieving it and whether or not freedom is truly achieved remains ambiguous. There are often individuals in civilized society who struggle and believe themselves to be free after a hard earned victory against oppression. Yet, the implications of maintaining a civilized social structure upon freedom is often overlooked. Many individuals view themselves as free from a subjective standpoint, although true freedom has an absolute meaning.

Jonas thought that after they received their assignments, him and Asher, his best friend, he thought that they would grow apart and no longer be friends. Throughout the beginning of the book, Jonas kept worrying about how they might grow apart from each other. In the book Jonas thought to himself “...but what would become of me and Asher and the assignments we received”. Jonas did not want them to grow apart because they have been best friends since they were little. This was hard for him because he didn't know what would become of them and what would become of them.
“We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others” (Lowry). In other words, this means that to get what you want, you have to get rid of other things you have. Although there are many similarities between The Giver and our society, there are a lot more differences like families, rules, and personal freedoms. For starters there are many differences with families between their society and our society.
