The two stories are based on the well known devil and its sanctuary otherwise known as, hell. The story Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, takes place in Enfield, Connecticut. Preacher Jonathan Edwards, delivers a sermon describing the depths of the dangers below and the path mankind was heading towards. His speeches spoken with intense emotion and fervor has drowned people in fear. It scares non-christians into believing his sermons and become a follower of God as well. The other story, The Devil and Tom Walker, takes place in New England in an old house in the middle of a forest.. The story develops the main character, Tom Walker, and his encounter with the “black man,” otherwise known as, the Devil. The mysterious “black man” offers money …show more content…
A similar persuasive technique used is Emotional Appeal. In the story The Devil and Tom Walker, the Devil tries to strike fear into Tom’s heart. The Devil said “I am the great patron and prompter of slave dealers, and the grandmaster of salem witches” (PG 114). In this quote the Devil was introducing himself as a grand and entitled being. In the story Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Edwards is speaking with great fervor to touch and influence the people that attend his sermons. A part of his sermon… “the bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart” (PG 42). The quote from his sermon explains that God is prepared to strike at you at any moment. The stories also have a similarity within the story, the speaking of devil and hell. From Edward’s sermon, “natural men are held in the hand of God, over the pit of hell” (PG 41). From Devil and Walker, “the devil take me”(PG 122). Within both of these quotes comes a similarity over the topic of hell and the devil. The stories are very similar and include common themes and similar …show more content…
A big difference is found in the storyline between the two. One story, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, is a sermon being told by Puritan Jonathan Edwards. Some words from his sermon, “there will be no end to this exquisite horrible misery”(PG 43). The other story, The Devil and Tom Walker, talks about how people who appear as devoted but would give their life for money and riches. A little part from the story, “when will you want the rhino”(PG 119). Their storylines are completely different and also feature different types of persuasion techniques. Sinners uses the technique, Plain Folks to persuade the people. Jonathan Edwards was a well known person, but after all, he is just a normal human like us all. He exclaimed, “let every one that is out of Christ, now awake and fly from the wrath come” (PG 44). In other words, this meant that non-followers of Christ have a bad future imminent. Since he is like us all, a human, his message was being spread like wildfire. The Devil and Walker uses the persuasive technique, Testimonial. “The black man told him of great sums of money buried by Kidd”(PG 115). According to this, the black man was persuading Tom Walker to sell his soul for the buried treasure. To help clarify, the Devil would be seen more as a dealer and trickster rather than the evil mastermind portrayed today. These differences were different, but still the stories binded under a
