As a result of the Compromise of 1850, which defused the quarrel between the free Northern States and the slave Southern States, the territories acquired during the Mexican-American War were determined to be free, slave, or dependent upon the principle of popular sovereignty. California was admitted as a free state, the Utah and New Mexico territories were to be determined by popular sovereignty, the Texas-New Mexico boundary was solidified, and slave trade was terminated in Washington, D.C., making it easier for the South to recover fugitive slaves (Document A). As stated by an Anonymous Georgian in “Plain Words for the North,” everything the South could ask for was embodied in the Constitution, but two provisions were necessary to the South’s success – “the recognition of slavery where the people choose it and the remedy for fugitive slaves” (Document B). The North saw popular sovereignty and the remedy of fugitive slaves as deceptive encouragement of immoral and unconstitutional activity (Document C). But, southerners viewed the North’s assumption of ownership to be unconstitutional.
Northern and Southern opinions on slavery differed greatly and caused a major divide. While the South fully supported slavery, the Northern citizens were abolitionists set on dissolving the act. Northern Whigs were major abolitionists before and during the Civil War. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 forced all African-Americans in the US to become slaves if they were found by any slave owner, even if he was not their own. This law applied to the entirety of the country, thus making free African-Americans subject to slavery and inhibiting the Whigs from legally protecting any remaining Northern African-Americans (Document M).
Slavery persisted in the United States for many years, causing a break between the North and South that led to the civil war. According to the text, despite its brutality and cruelty, the slave system caused little protest until the 18th century. Some began to criticize slavery for its abuse of the rights of man. The text states in the United States all states north of Maryland abolished slavery between 1777 and 1804. Antislavery feelings had little effect on slavery in the plantations of the Deep South and the West Indies according to the statement in the text.
The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt by the U.S Congress to settle divisive issues between the North and South, including slavery expansion, apprehension in the North of fugitive slaves, and slavery in the District of Columbia. The Compromise of 1850 failed because Senator John C. Calhoun from the South and Senator William Seward from the North could not agree on what Henry Clay was putting down. Part of the compromise was to make California a slavery free state which benefits the North, and enforcing a stricter fugitive slave law which benefits the South. Both the North and South opposed what the other was benefiting from. What sparked the failure of the Compromise was the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
Most of the other Southern States were fully convinced that Andrew Jackson was ready and capable of making good on his threats. Fortunately for the nation as a whole, the U. S. Congress was already working on a compromise bill in an attempt to settle the issue and soon passed the Compromise Tariff of 1833. On March 13, 1833, the South Carolina convention reconvened and repealed the original Ordinance of Nullification but as a symbolic gesture, nullified the Force Bill. The United States had seemingly avoided the crisis but over next few years, most would realize that the crisis had merely been delayed. There has been a popular contingency among American historians and authors that tariffs were only a pretense and that South Carolina’s true motive was the defense of slavery.
The 1860s were a tumultuous time. From the election of an anti-slavery, republican president and his subsequent undoing, to a civil war tearing a nation in two, times were troublesome. Due to these times, many legislators took advantage of the times to make amendments to the country and solve some of the most pressing matters of the time. One of the issues that had been at the forefront for decades had been the rights of African Americans. Whether it be the abolitionists in the north, or the freed slaves in the south, many were clamoring for congress to figure out solutions.
Civil War LEQ When the United States admitted more Western territories into the Union, their only goal was to expand the country as much as possible. They did not foresee how extending slavery into western territories could lead to a Civil War. The controversy over the extension of slavery into western territories contributed to the Civil war by politicizing the issue so no politician could be neutral on it, by creating a fight for economic influence between the North and South, and by increasing the feelings superiority/separation between the North and South.
The Unsuccessful Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 In the time of slavery, the North and the South struggled to find a balance over African Americans civil rights. The United States began to segregate into the Union states, those who did not support slavery, and the Confederate states, those who did support slavery. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was among one of the many acts enforced during this time. It was ultimately unsuccessful in establishing peace between the North and the South because it was not a peace intended act, it was ineffective, and it upset both sides.
And the South thought that was a failed compromise. In Document 8: Lithograph by Harry T. Peters, shows two men in the front on the ground while one (Preston Brooks) is beating the man on the ground (Sumner) with his cane. This happened because Senator Charles Sumner delivered a long speech called “The Crime Against Kansas” which included him attacking pro-slavery men and insulting the South Carolina and one of its Senators. Two days after the speech, Brooks broke into the Senate chambers and beat Sumner with a cane. Brooks didn’t like the speech that Sumner gave because Brooks is a pro-slavery man who was offended by Sumner’s speech so he decided to take a stand and defend himself.
Slavery, the most intensely debated phenomenon of not only the U.S. but of the our world. Despite the fact that slavery remained at large until the mid 19th century, opposition to slavery had been evolving across the country. There are many underlying forces and specific events that contributed to the opposition of slavery, for instance the abolition movement, Nat Turner’s rebellion, uncle Tom’s Cabin, the disagreement between the American people about slavery, and many others. Not to mention people had their own interest in slavery and it bothered some people in some ways. Opposition to slavery grew since the colonial period, especially in the North, as states Document A. In 1776, Delaware becomes the first state to prohibit the importation of slaves.
Many slave owners feared that slaves were plotting to revolt against them. They were trying to pass an act to remove the freed slaves away from the slave states. They believed that the freed slaves were trying to help free those who were in bondage, which most were doing even though it could cost them their freedom (Virtual freedom pg.15). The white southerners also felt that the slaves who look at those who were freed and try to escape or even ask to be
It was difficult to agree on any conflict because Americans were on two completely different sides of the story. When this problem was noticed Henry Clay tried to give peace to the United States, unfortunately, his compromise only worked temporarily. Before the Compromise of 1850, the U.S. had just had a war with Mexico, and the slave controversy was getting more and more out of hand. The Free states, who have high industry income, do not think slavery is right and want it abolished. The Slave states want slaves, because of the amount of agriculture they have; they need people to do the work.
The Reconstruction is the first thing I would talk about. I believe many people still have the impression that once slaves were freed in the South, that was it—all of a sudden everything was great for them, when in reality, they were essentially still slaves. I never knew about the black codes, vagrant laws, and sharecropping that took place in the South until this class. Slavery is covered as early as 7th grade, and I believe that the Reconstruction period following it is a significant enough event that it should be addressed sooner, perhaps in high school, so even those who choose to not attend college have the chance to hear about it.
Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The foundation of America is freedom. Freedom from Britain. It allowed all male slaves to count as three-fifths of a person when counting population and would greatly increase the representation and political power of slave-owning states. In 1808, United States outlaws American participation in the African Slave Trade. The Compromise of 1850 includes a controversial Fugitive Slave Law that compels all citizens to help in the recovery of fugitive slaves. The Civil War outbreaks in 1861 due to slavery and Lincoln’s
