In Parable of the Sower many references are made to slavery, and how people are practically living in slavery and imprisonment in the year of 2024 in the United States. At the beginning of the book this is shown because of the way people are forced to live. Some people live in small communities with walls around them. In this community everyone looks out for each other. This includes giving each other food if they are hungry or going with them outside the gate, which is a completely different world. However living there is not as good as it may seem. They are forced to stay inside of these walls like prisoners, and if they choose to go outside of the walls they must be heavily armed. This is because of the constant threat of being killed by thieves, drug addicts, and poor people wanting food and clothes. These are the same people that are trying to get inside of the community to kill all of the people inside and take all of their food and other items. Outside of these small communities it is clearly seen how some people are living. There are entire families roaming around the streets naked trying to survive. One may think that the government would have tried to do something to solve this problem, but they did not. They are powerless in improving this situation. This relates back to the 20th century because slaves were constantly trying to escape slavery and they did this by going north because they would be free there. Lauren and her group of friends knows that this will be a difficult and long journey but they make it because they hope that it will mean that they will have a better life.
