The sociological concept, social norms, is applicable to the content in the article “What is social construction?” written by Paul A. Boghossian because norms are socially constructed. Social constructionism only exists because people give things reality through social agreement. Social constructionism also requires a society and is based on that specific society, varying depending on the needs or values of that group of people. Norms are socially constructed expectations that effect individual’s behaviors and influence why people act certain ways depending on the context of the situation. Social norms could not possibly exist without the presence of a society.
When I broke the norm on my own, outside of section I asked students in my Arabic class and also in
In my practice of Community Health Nursing, I have over 130 patients. Social determinants of health are something that I always take into consideration when I am developing a plan of care and service plan for these patients. I understand that Social Determinants are the circumstances that we born into, and develop in throughout out lives, including our jobs, and as we mature, it continues to affect us. These circumstances or situations also include our health care systems, and how they affect and contribute to our own
Social norms are the unwritten rules of society, e.g. what is expected of us such as: holding doors open, wearing gender specific clothes. This means if you were expressing individuality you would be classed as abnormal. There are no universal set of rules because it changes with time, culture and religions , this means you would be classed as abnormal in some places and times. If you are gay or wear the opposites genders clothes then you would also be classed as abnormal, the problem about this would be, again different for other cultures because things are not the same across cultures, what is normal in one culture could differ in another as written by McLeod(2008). To define abnormality, it would be when people do not follow what is the
The problem that I came when trying to break a social norm is trying to find a reason to. In other words most social norms are there for a reason and especially when such a big number of people do just group together and don’t “think outside of the box” were stuck with them. In Under the Influence: How the Group Changes What We Think by Shirley S Wang she talks about how social norms get their power. Dr Berger states that “The more public and object or behavior is, the more likely it is to spread.”
The social norm I violated was I ran through the living room and into the den at my mom’s house. . I then jumped on the sofa and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. I felt a little awkward while doing it at first, but I was around my family members so I was not embarrassed. Once I started reciting the pledge I did not get an immediate reaction.
In this study chosen, “Perceived marijuana norms and social expectancies among entering college student marijuana users,” the research and experiment correlated the perceived social norms and compared them to the out come expectancies of marijuana use, as well as, the related consequences. The results of the study showed that the descriptive norms and expectancies are positively associated to the consequences of marijuana use. However, the injunctive norms are negatively associated with consequences when the levels of both descriptive norms and expectations are elevated during a situation. Subjects were assessed for, “their marijuana use, related consequences, perceived norms, and social expectancies related to marijuana use.”
Ever since I was allowed to date, I was taught that the man is supposed to pay for the dinner bill. The man paying the bill rule is definitely supposed to be obeyed when you are dating. The man is also supposed to open all doors and pull out the lady’s chair. Let all alone, the man is supposed to pick the lady up and drive to the date . Therefore, I decided to violate the norm of paying the bill on a date.
Essentially, I felt that it was taboo to be nice to others, be a little nerdy, not be involved in sports, and express how I felt about people and or ideas. Because of this, I was an outcast for a long time; I spent two to three years with little to no friends in my life, but I always thought it better to be true to myself than to sacrifice my integrity for a friendship. Naturally, of course, over the next four or so years I slowly found people who saw past the intransigent views that constrained the area which I moved to, Joshua
Social Constructs are products of discrimination; race did not exist until racism existed, class did not exist until classism existed, and gender did not exist until sexism existed. These constructs occupy prominent positions in artwork, politics, as well as in social hierarchies. A social construct describes a mechanism developed by society, oftentimes with the intention of segregating and degrading people in order to establish power. When ideas are ‘social constructs’, it is not to say that said idea does not exist, but exists to castigate those for whom social constructs do not favor.
The social norms I decided to break were the unwritten rules of eye contact. In general, we all adhere to the descriptive norm of eye contact being normal. However, there is a fine line in the injunctive norms that tell us what is correct eye contact and what is incorrect. It is normal to look a person in the eye while in conversation; in fact, it is considered rude not too. In addition, there is the norm that tells us to break eye contact when a person has finished speaking and the conversation as stalled.
The social norm I violated was that of perseverance. Minorities are at many times perceived to be people who give up and settle for less. However, when we reach the common goal of attending a four-year university, the pressure to succeed is inevitable. Being able to attend such a prestigious university and not have the burden of paying for your education puts a tremendous amount of weight on ones shoulders. There is that constant pressure from family and peers, that I have to succeed despite adversity.

Being a woman means that you show concern for your health and self-care. (Ogden, 2017) That is the social norm for society. Society encourages women to have healthier behavior and show help seeking behaviors. (Ogden, 2017) I sometimes feel obligated to make doctors’ appointments because many women around me do so when they show the slightest symptom that might suggest an illness.
Thirteen-year-old Genie was found tied to a potty chair on November 4th, 1970, wearing a diaper and unable to talk. Unaware of the outside world and societal norms, Genie was known as the first modern wild child. Genie was locked in her basement for almost her complete life, unable to learn from others and have the opportunity to mentally develop. Through her attempts at rehabilitation by a number of doctors, Genie was able to learn social norms, develop a sense of self and expand her agents of socialization. As Genie learned and explored her new community, she was qualified to adapt to some societal norms.
