The social norm I violated was that of perseverance. Minorities are at many times perceived to be people who give up and settle for less. However, when we reach the common goal of attending a four-year university, the pressure to succeed is inevitable. Being able to attend such a prestigious university and not have the burden of paying for your education puts a tremendous amount of weight on ones shoulders. There is that constant pressure from family and peers, that I have to succeed despite adversity. Since many of my peers dread the thought of class the next day, the topic of how each of us is handling school is not really discussed unless it is the typical whine by a few.
