“Ugh! As if! : Stereotypes and Confidence in Clueless Most are familiar with the famous quote “Ugh as if!” from none other than Cher Horowitz, a fan favorite blonde, but many don’t realize the important messages director Amy Heckerling is attempting to tell the audience in her coming of age movie Clueless: how stereotypes are often imprecise and the potency of self confidence. The movie follows the life of Cher, an affluent highschool student, who attempts to help others, yet mainly struggles with working on herself. But, the greatest conflict in this film is romance. She mainly portrays this through her main character, Cher Horowitz. When first introduced to Cher, many may categorize her in the dumb blonde stereotype, and the film’s title certainly does not help. But, Cher forces the audience to rethink their prenotions of a typical blonde and makes it clear she is working towards self improvement (Mazmanian 5).
