Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a science fiction novel that is full of archetypes that explore the theme of fighting for what you believe in. The story is set in a dystopian society where people are divided into castes based on their color. The protagonist, Darrow, is a Red who lives in a society where Reds are the lowest caste and are forced to mine beneath the surface of Mars for the benefit of the Golds, the highest caste. The first archetype that is found in Red Rising is the hero archetype.
In “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, Ray Bradbury uses the archetype of death and rebirth to develop Jim’s character. Jim “was born one minute after midnight, which makes it October thirty-first. ”(1:6) October is in the fall, and fall and winter suggest death. He was born on Halloween, a holiday that is associated with fear, monsters, and dark magic. He was also born at night at twelve o’ one in the morning, while it is still dark.
After analyzing “On the Rainy Road” through an archetypal lens, it is clear that the symbols effectively indicate that going to war was a terrible decision. To start, Tim’s archetypal character showed that he was not emotionally ready to go to war. For instance, when Tim was trying to decide if he should go to war or run away to Canada, he had flashbacks described as follows, “I saw a seven-year-old boy in a white cowboy hat… I saw a sixteen-year-old kid decked out for his first prom, looking spiffy in a white tux,” (O’Brien). Tim imagined the colour white which is the archetypal colour for purity and innocence, showing he represents the divine child archetype.

An example of real-life tragic hero is Whitney Houston. A well-known singer and actress, Whitney Houston died tragically in 2012. Her life, following the five characteristics of a tragic hero, most closely follows that of an Aristotelian archetype. Following the first trait of an Aristotelian archetype, Houston was born into a respected musical family.
Hannery O’ Connor’s short story is about a Misfit that has a conflict in his life which lead him into making bad decisions in the future that harm him. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, O’ Connor uses symbolic archetypes by using the grandmother as a symbol of love and care and also uses the Misfit as a symbol of violence and death. The situational archetype used is when the Misfit takes vengeance on people that come his way. This is because of self-petty. The setting archetype used in the short story takes place in the dirt road where all the violence happened.

Mental Battles at Sea 227. The number of days Pi survived at sea with little food, little water and, even a Bengal Tiger..or so he thought. Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, describes the journey of a young boy named Piscine Patel, also known as Pi, whose father owns a zoo in India. When his family decides to sell the zoo and move to Canada, the freighter they travel in breaks down and sinks. Luckily, Pi gets on a life boat just in time but weirdly enough, with four zoo animals who were also in the freighter.
In the novel The Pillars of the Earth, many characters exist with malicious, corrupt intentions. Whether it be in the pursuit of self-gain, or the desire to destroy others, these antagonists constantly cause havoc and destruction. The only thing that comes in between these antagonists and the rest of the population is a few unique individuals. Multiple characters in the novel are characterized as the hero archetype, and although each one operates in their own unique way, they all contribute to the betterment of society, while protecting the people around them. The common trait that defines these individuals as hero archetypes is that they all undergo a quest at some point in the story, which involves a separation, transformation, and return.

The term Evoke means to invite an entity,spirit, archetype or deity into your cast circle but not into yourself. You are able to feel their energy and emotions and it comes out through you. You express their emotions and behavior through yourself but you are still in control of yourself and the spirit, entity, archetype or deity is still outside of you. Evoking is not the same as Invoking, in which the spirit, entity, archetype or deity basically “steps into” your body and controls your actions and can speak through you. In Evoking the spirit, entity, archetype or deity is actually within you.
