In chapter 19, Tom Robinson gets his chance to speak. Tom tells his side of the story. He says that he had been called by Mayella to help her fix a chiffarobe. Mayella had asked him to help her fix things other times before and he does because he feels sorry for her. According to Tom, while he is helping, Mayella had grabbed him and kissed him, and when asked if he resisted, Tom says: “Mr. Finch, I tried, I tried to ‘thout bein’ ugly to her.
In both of theses stories there is some precious stuff going on. In to kill a mockingbird Tom Robinson was accused of rape that he did not do, but because he was black he had got accused of it. In the report of Emmett Till Till was killed because he had want to the south to visit his family but he was killed because he was black. Emmett Till was innocent but because he had no wetness no one would have ever believed him in his point of view.
To In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson is a accused of raping Mayella Ewell’s. The evidence that will show that Tom Robinson is guilty. The best physical evidence is that Mr.Robinson left arm is crippled. “His left was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side. ”(Chapter 18).
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
Bob did this to cover up the shame and guilt Mayella had. Atticus even had evidence to show Mayella’s bruises are from her father beating her. Even with the evidence proving Tom’s innocence, the all-white jury sent him to jail. Later, Tom tried escaping prison, is shot, and killed. Bob Ewell decides that the judge and Atticus have disrespected him, and demands to take his revenge on them.
In Harper Lee’s novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” an African American named Tom Robinson was found guilty of raping Mayella even though he is clearly innocent. The legal system and the people in Maycomb were unfair with Tom Robinson, however if Tom Robinson was a different race the case would be judged differently. Tom was not only accused of raping Mayella but also beating her. The first piece of evidence that shows that Tom is innocent is that Mayella was beaten by a left handed person.
In this paragraph I will be questioning the Ewells’ reasoning for lying. While reading the court scenes, I got the feeling that Mayella and Bob had separate motives for trying to convict Tom. There are quite a few reasons that Bob would want Tom Robinson convicted. His most demanding motive would have to be the need to cover up the fact that he abuses his children.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a successful classic novel that was dated back during the times of racial inequality in the south. Because of the racial issues in a town called Maycomb in Alabama, a black man, Tom Robinson was falsely accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Even though someone like Atticus, a lawyer and a father, might put his kids in danger for being his defense lawyer, he was wise to do it. Atticus taking this job opened up the eyes of the people in Maycomb.
Atticus refutes the following statement by saying, “She has committed no crime, she has merely broken a rigid and time-honored code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with” (Lee 231). “She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity her: she is white” (Lee 231). Atticus makes use of descriptive emotional responses for the jury and the audience to pity Mayella's situation of being unable to control her situation of poverty and lonesomeness. Atticus then reverted the audience's emotions toward indignation of blatant injustice in such a way that Mayella framed Tom Robinson. Assuming that Atticus is correct, Tom Robinson would have been the victim of Mayella to such an extent that when Tom Robinson ran away, Mayella decided to condemn Tom for her mistake of tempting a Negro and sexually assaulting him.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout observes prejudiced decisions made based on Tom Robinson’s skin color. Tom Robinson appeared in court to defend himself for allegedly beating and raping Mayella Ewell,
In the novel: To Kill A Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell, a poor white woman, accused Tom Robinson, an African American, of rape. The Ewell’s are very indigent and her father, Bob Ewell, gets drunk and abuses Mayella. Since Mayella is very poor, this makes her not so powerful. In Maycomb, Alabama, A poor white woman named Mayella Ewell who lives behind the town garbage dump, accuses Tom Robinson, an African American, of rape.
In the South of the United States in the 1930´s, the justice system was very unfair towards colored people. Colored people that were sent to court could not receive a fair trial because of the prejudice and racism from the jury. This happened all the time, especially in Maycomb Alabama. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a colored man named Tom Robinson was convicted of assaulting a white woman just because of the color of his skin. Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty for many reasons.
Because the jury did not favor black men, Tom Robinson did not receive a fair trial, although Atticus made a great case. Segregation directly disobeys the fourteenth amendment, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.” Maycomb Alabama is where the story, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place. Tom Robinson’s trial out come was not based on factual evidence. Mayella was lying to the jury, while Tom was completely innocent.
