Honesty is a cornerstone of civilization. Without honesty, any relationship will lack depth and ultimately fall apart. In other words, when people have relationships based on lies, they will only experience problems. Deceit will almost always hurt the liar himself and the people they care about. This idea is prominently displayed in Romeo and Juliet, Jane Eyre, the story of Zeus and Io, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and To Kill a Mockingbird. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, trickery and deceit are both at the root of all of the obstacles Romeo and Juliet’s relationship faces. First, they have a wedding in secret. Then, when Juliet finds out she has been promised to another man, she doesn’t come clean to her parents. She instead, once again with the help of yet another ruse, fakes her death. If Romeo and Juliet had only confessed about their love for eachother, they could have saved everyone a great deal of heartache. Because of their disregard for the truth, Paris, Lady Montague, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Romeo and Juliet themselves were killed.

He is the Scarlet Pimpernel. Percy hides this from nearly everyone, but most importantly, he keeps it from his wife Marguerite. Because Marguerite is unaware of her husband’s other identity, she inadvertently assists in a plot to kill the Scarlet Pimpernel. But, not all of the blame lies on of Percy’s side. Marguerite has her share of secrets she keeps from her husband as well. With all of the deception in this relationship, it is no curiosity why it lacks depth. They hardly ever speak to each other about personal matters and there seems to be a constant, unspoken tension between them. By the end of the book, they come clean to one another and with time, their relationship is healed. Honesty and openness is the thing that brings them back together. Instead of living in a world distorted with lies, they are able to be happy and have a thriving
