Examples Of Unrealistic Moments In Literature

1795 Words8 Pages

There are times when authors use unrealistic moments in their texts to help explore the bigger themes they want the readers to see. But it's in those moments were we have to think deeper in order to see what the bigger message is. Examples of three texts that we have read this semester were The Twilight Zone, “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” by Rod Serling, (500) Days of Summer by Marc Webb, and The Truman Show by Peter Weir. In the first text listed, the unrealistic event was having living toys with thoughts and emotions. Then the second text is unrealistic because the boy falls in love with a girl but he completely blocks out the outside world as he is caught up within his fantasy. The third text was also unrealistic because there are …show more content…

There were many of them throughout the text but one key one stood out to fit the authors bigger theme. Tom is the boy who fell in love with Summer which is the girl. But he had such a big obsession and a big fantasy to be with her. As he eventually began going out with her, that's when he starting blocking out reality. He only tried to live in the fantasy and not in reality. In a review based off the text the author said, “Can he accept that she simply likes him for now, not for forever” (Ebert). This quote means that Summer is with Tom for the moment and possibly for the experience. But over time she isn't going to want to be with him forever. So it's also saying that she is going to leave him as well. Ebert’s intent in putting this quote was to foreshadow a break up that Webb has put in the future. By them breaking up it also happens to kill Tom’s fantasies and forcing him back into reality. Now this quote connects to my thesis. The author used the unrealistic event of Tom just living in fantasy. So as they break up Tom’s fantasies will be crushed by reality. So now he's going to be in a situation where he hasn't been in a long time. By this happening, Tom will begin to question everything that has happened in the relationship and in his life. So he is questioning his reality and by doing that it fits Webb's bigger theme. Now going off the breakup scene, there was a part where Tom ran out Summer’s house as he saw Summer with another guy. In an online chat by a class, they discussed this scene and what happened. One of the students in the chat said, “The song keeps saying no one's got it all” (Sean). This quote means that not everybody can get what they want in their life. If people really want to get what they want they'd have to work extremely hard for it. But it still wouldn't last forever. The intent of this student is to explain how your expectations cannot
