Exercise therapy is the hallmark to physiotherapy treatment programmes and is the key element in ensuring a high standard of efficiency and outcome quality of patient care. It is the most used form of physiotherapy. The purpose of home exercise is to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability. (ISCP, 2015). Physiotherapy programmes are needed in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by the process of ageing or that of injury or disease. (Peek et al., 2015). Pain is also a dominant part to low adherence to home exercises. (Beinart et al., 2013). If patients feel like their not progressing, a lot of the time they will just give up. Perhaps the physio didn’t tailor to the patient or they didn’t set out goals to achieve. Time is a major factor in poor compliance. (Miller et al., 1997). People feel they don’t have the minutes or hours in the day to give to improving their own health status. Psycholoigical reasons, psychiatric disorders and social factors that surround patients can all have a part to play. A multidisciplanary team is group of healthcare workers who are representatives of different disciplines, each providing specific services to the patient. They work together towards a specific set of goals. A multidisciplanary team is very important in helping the physio prevent low adherence especially if a patient has more complex needs. (Borrill et al., 2000). Patients are ignorant about important issues,the nature of their disease and nature of their home exercise treatment. (Vermeire et al., 2001). A good physio/ patient relationship is an essential variable in ensuring high adherence. (Miller et al., 1997). If there’s poor communication between a clinician and their client, the client is less likely to complete their exercise programme.
