Why People Should Not Be Allowed to Own Exotic Pets. Thinking about owning a tiger, monkey, or any other exotic pet? Believe it or not, it is not as simple as just buying them, in fact, it is much more dangerous than owning a dog, and it might not be for the reasons that many think. Many people do not really have opinions on the owning of these exotic pets, as it is not very common to do so. People should not be allowed to own exotic pets, period. This is due to the many diseases that they can spread, their mistreatment on the way to their buyer, and the large amount of attacks on people and other animals by them. Most of the time, if someone was to buy an exotic pet, it would be online. Now, the pets don’t just get swooped up from an exotic pet farm, they get taken from the wild. A large majority of them are smuggled illegally to the buyer. P.E.T.A. claims “Animals destined for the pet trade are yanked from their homes in places such as Australia, Africa, and Brazil and are subjected to grueling transport.” (Source 5). This article goes further into the mistreatment of the exotic animals and demonstrates the very small government regulations. In Source 1, the author writes, “Three federal laws regulate exotic animals — the Endangered Species Act, the Public Health Service Act, and the Lacey Act. However, these laws primarily regulate the importation of exotic animals into the United States and not private possession.” (Source 1). Here, the author goes into detail about these laws, and describes how the government will really only bust on illegal exotic animal importation only if they have a reason to catch the criminals. It also has almost no federal laws against owning these pets
