Your description of Seven Counties Services as an organization that aides individuals “who are fighting addictions, abuse, mental illness, and developmental disabilities” is remarkable (Mrock, 2016, para.1). What a wonderful organization. Crutchfield and Grant (2012) stated that “high-impact nonprofits engage in both direct service and advocacy”(p.49). It is clear from your post that Seven Counties Services provide a service to the individuals whom it engages.
To achieve this objective, Mangan utilized volunteers to help alleviate some of the officer’s duties, which in turn created revenue that could be utilized to obtain better equipment and functioning facilities. Next on Mangan’s agenda was to get the community involved with the police and vice versa. He attended over 400 meetings and spoke of the need to integrate the community with policing. He spoke directly and frankly with the community. He let them know that money was an issue and that he needed their help to better the department and their communities.
What I noticed is that the female character in this story was a member of the Youth Federation, and the macoutes wanted to arrest her until her father paid them off to let her go. That also shows that her father was fearing for her and didn’t want them to take her away. Chicago, at the time was the only major metropolitan with rising murder rates, and Englewood (location of the school) has one of the highest neighbourhood murder rates.
