How do you make a kid a good baseball player? According to Mike Matheny who wrote “The Letter That Went Viral”, it is not hitting home runs, or being the fastest baserunner, it is about being a good sport to one another. Hustlin and not losing focus are qualities of good sportsmanship. In this inspirational essay, we see a coach shifting the focus on how it is good to have a lot of sportsmanship. I agree with Mike Matheny that if you want to be a good baseball player, you need good sportsmanship.
Lowry high school athletics have changed my life in many ways. It has taught me discipline, respect and how to handle my success and failures. High school athletics to me have been more than just time to miss school or just a thing to do to mess around with my friends. Athletics have already enhanced my career tremendously already. The first thing high school athletics has taught me is disciple.
Diagnostic Essay After reading the article “You Can Grow Your Brain”, it made me feel more confident in myself and encouraged me to take on new tasks in the near future. By reading this article I have learned that the more you practice or exercise at something, the better you will be at whatever it is you chose. There was a time in elementary, where I discovered how much I loved sports, however, I wasn 't very athletic. I loved watching the game of basketball, it interested me so much and was very entertaining. When recess or free time came around each school day, after lunch, some guys including my older brother would shoot baskets and play games with teams.
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.
Throughout my years of participating in high school basketball, I have overcome many challenges. My freshmen year, basketball started in a way I never expected. Continuing on, I understood the real meaning of hard work, and what it takes. Lessons I learned in basketball will carry on throughout my life, helping me to become a successful adult.
What will it take for me to be successful in high school is hard work, determination, and concentration. What I mean by this is I will do my to not only pass in high school but succeed and overachieve. I want this because I'll never like to be second and that includes high school to. I believe that second is never remembered and don't get the same opportunity as a person in first so that motivates me to do my best. This means that in high school I have to learn how to adapt to that environment especially since I'm expected to be a student athlete which is going to be two times harder but it will work out if I learn how to manage myself and require zero tolerance, now what I mean by this is that I'm going to have to step up to another level, I have to stay focus on my work and football.
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).
At the age of 5, I aspired to either become a professional athlete or an ESPN anchor. Ever since I could remember, I would kick a soccer ball around, dribble a basketball, or throw a baseball around with friends and family. I used to be the league champion and MVP of the team every season, but as time progressed, other competitors would rocket past in height and become the best players because of their size advantage. Although other young athletes became stronger and taller than me, it did not change the passion and commitment I had for sports.
Throughout my life, I have faced adversity everywhere I go, no matter what I do. So when people tell me that they have had a rough day, my favorite thing to tell them is, “Remember that adversity builds a man.” This philosophy has carried me a long way, and most importantly has allowed me to grow into the individual I am today. One of my biggest personal accomplishments, which was being able to play college baseball, was spurred on because an upperclassman told me I would never be good enough to play high school varsity ball. I proceeded by taking that player’s starting job the next year.
Students have to have all these factors to be considered just one word and not be apprehensive to getting there. For students to be more successful they need to be familiar with failure, deferred gratification, and it is not luck it is education. With these key elements comes a new breed into society. On the outside success seems like just an achievement, but in reality the answer is failure.
The Nation’s High school Students Success story From my point of view, before president Obama took office, was that high school students were struggling very hard to succeed, because students preferred to drop out of school rather than to receive a diploma. Back then there was not much of a good influence on the teens as there is today. Nerveless, this generations of students are willing to work hard because they have someone to look up to. For instance, president Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have spoken highly about receiving higher education. This makes students want to better themselves.
I did well at corner-back too where I tipped a pass and I got two tackles. So I was ready to help the RB’s score a touchdown, and I was in the huddle When all of a sudden, my QB told me that I was going to get the ball on a counter play. I got really nervous when he told me this, But when I lined up for the play I remember what Bugs told me, and I got really confident. When he gave me the ball, I ran as fast as I could and juked out one kid, then trucked over another kid, and I was running away from at least 5 players ahead of me.
In this day and age with professional athletes being at the top of the social spectrum, youth sports have gotten very popular. “More than 26 million children ages 6 to 17 played team sports in 2014(Rosenwald).” Youth sports are very popular because it brings the great feeling of being on a team. When you are on a team you feel like you can do anything together, and nothing is stopping you. There are also many flaws in youth sports.
Basketball is just at the top of my list of priorities. It may take the number one spot above my grades and being a better person, but those are still things I do to better myself. Although it’s number one my grades never fall because of games or practices. I do my best on the court, in the classroom, and in my everyday life. Doing my best means doing what I can do by myself as well as working well with my teammates.
