Why College Isn’t Worth It Attending college is something that many High School students look forward to as a buffer or a way to make the transition into adulthood easier, but a rising question has people considering: Is going to college really worth it? While some describe college as their best years, it leaves most attendees in debt and with a degree they may never use. Between tuition fees, traveling, housing, food, and textbooks, all college students are bound to owe at least a few thousand.
In the articles, “Is College Worth It” written by David Leonhardt and “Why College Isn’t for Everyone” written by Chris Matthews, both writers build an argument to persuade readers that attending college is for everyone and is a time to emphasize one’s thoughts for the future. In the article, “Is College Worth It”, Leonhardt begins his argument by using statistics. Leonhardt states that, “Americans with four-year college degrees made 98 percent more an hour on average in 2013 than people without a degree” (Leonhardt, par. 3). This implies that individuals who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher are more likely to earn more money per hour compared to those who do not have a degree.

In the novel Dear Martin by Nic Stone, we see this concept come to life. Through the lens of Justyce, an African American high school student who lives life in a microaggressively racist world, we see as his actions come back to revisit him as well as the way that others come back to haunt themselves. Through his experiences, Justyce discovers the value and peace that comes with letting things marinate on its own, instead of living life seeking vengeance against those who have wronged him.

Author Charles Murry talks about those who are more likely to go to college and depending on the percentage scale who is more prepared for college and who is not prepared for college and when is the best time to teach kids core knowledge. An obstacle for a college-bound undocumented student is of course financial. Based on current government policies, undocumented students cannot qualify for federal and most state-based financial aid, including grants, work study jobs, or loan programs, the cost of full-time enrollment as a college student ranges from $15,000 - $40,000 per year. The cost for undocumented students and their families, that do not qualify for financial aid are literally prohibited from attending college. Not only are students denied financial aid money they do not have to pay back but, also are denied being able to borrow money and later on pay it back. College Isn 't The Only Answer If anyone has ever went to high school, then they have heard about college. Everyone has a different point of view on the idea of college. Part of it depends on how someone was raised.
In addition to monetary obstacles, societal obstacles are a part of many college student lives as well. There are many different societies in college which means that there are many different societal obstacles to possibly deal with. There are plenty of obstacles that college students will encounter and they can simply avoid them. These are issues such as smoking or drinking. Students who are around crowds who like to smoke and drink could possibly pressure the college student to do either or even both.
My mother and father have always wanted the best for me, like all good parents do. One of the many things that they expect from me is to receive a college education, something that they never had the chance to do. My parents always advise me to not to make the same mistakes as they did, to go to college so I can get a good job and not have to struggle in my life. With no alternative, my father had to drop out of school to help his family financially after his parents had gotten a divorce, and then he had received his GED.
For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.
There are many leading factors on why people might not go to college. Some reasons may include: financial aspects of college, the tests you must take to get in, or just having no desire to go to college. Currently I am a high school senior and I have been given the option to go to college. I am trying to figuring out what I want to spend my life doing.
Students face various challenges throughout their college career. Thus, the problems that students have can range from balance, new lifestyle, to financial problems. Therefore, finding a balance between being a student, possibly working, and keeping up with their social life is a necessity. Similarly, others are away from home for the first time thus, they have a new responsibility with being on their own and findings ways to deal with homesickness. Likewise, being exposed to new financial situations is yet another challenge college students will need to learn how to cope with.
