Rapid population growth and no expansion to the cities is what I believe led to the horrid conditions read within this PDF file. Both Paris and Vienna sustained a rapid and planned transformation from a congested, walled city to a modern metropolis in the nineteenth century with a central government driven initiative
Alexis Adan 12/4/2014 CH150 T,TH 9:35- 11:00 The Aztec pantheon was a very important and vital concept for the Aztec empire since their religion was born from fear of nature and fear of the end of the world. The death of a sea serpent was actually the cause of the universe’s birth. The Aztecs believed the pantheon attempted to create the world five times.
As the population of United States grew rapidly, the small agricultural based economy was not sufficient to provide job for everyone, or fulfillment of needs. The population uprising was a great factor in the change
This attracted more people to move to cities. By 1900, thirty percent of the U.S population lived in citiess. However this urbanization came with many problems. For many of the people living in the cities, they had an extremely low quality of life. Another result that came with America’s industrialization and urbanization was capitalism.
Urbanization, or the growth of cities, erupted during the Industrial Revolution. Cities were a place of work, innovation, and technology. Over the course of fifty years (1850-1900) more and more people moved to the cities, which caused more and more problems in them. With these problems came solutions, and those solutions led to change. These changes could be good like movements to get cleaner water or having plumbing.
Did the benefits of urbanization overweigh the drawbacks? One can argue that the impact of migration of immigrants to cities in the 19th century can be viewed as benefict or draw back. Many people migrated from small farms to cities looking for a better life. With the growth in population cities developed around factories and transportation hubs to provide housing and support for workers looking for the good life. Yes, the benefits overweigh the drawbacks.
Urban areas doubled, tripled, or quadrupled in size which led to overcrowding in cities. Sometimes a large population is a good thing, but in this case the population was too big and caused many health problems. Living conditions were dirty and unhealthy. Cities were unsanitary and diseases filled the streets. There were no sanitation codes in cities.
One of the biggest incidences in the US was immigration. There was an immense growth within the urban population due to the rise of cities quickly becoming flooded with immigrants and workers from every corner of the country. However, living in a city did not meet high expectations. In the other hand, it was place with such poor qualities. The cities were overcrowded, lacked proper sanitation as well as housing.
American Urbanization started like a wildfire and it spread so rapidly that facilities and institutions in society could not keep up. From 1850 to 1900 America completely changed from its agricultural state into a new industry based society. The four paramount changes that occured during America’s urbanization period were new immigration, the build up of cities (skyscrapers and mass transit), living conditions, and boss rule and the rise of mass consumption. Even though the changes during urbanization did not come easily due to immense diversity, they still paved the way to modern day America.
The cause that lead to the Progressive era was the Gilded Age. Industrialization during the Gilded Age is what lead to urbanization and new ideas in the Progressive era. The Progressive era was a period of social activism and political reform across the United States during the 1890s-1920s. During this period, the Progressive movement was focused on eliminating corruption within the government. It covered social reform issues relating to female suffrage, education, working conditions, unionization, urbanization, industrialization and child labor.
Incorporating analysis’s from material provide in the Development and the City course at the University of Guelph, it is believed that a significant issues is the means to which governments invests in their people. Within cities, municipal governments are often more interested in modernizing than addressing the major structural concerns mentioned above. Furthermore, social inequalities do not just expand across cities, rather this is a problem that engulf the entire nation, which Boo also points to. This can especially be seen when
Montreal, the home of hockey, is the best city to do for the 5 Themes of Geography. I mean it is Canada, who doesn’t like Canada. Like I mentioned before, the five themes go perfectly well with this city. Montreal is in the province of Quebec.
Cities improve due to innovation, but humans residing in them may not. The Industrial Revolution was a period in time where new inventions helped labor become less taxing and more efficient in the South. On the other hand, the North developed urban cities, which attracted many people. Urban cities had become the epitome of civilization: ease of life and wealth was present, but not available to everyone. To elaborate, these urban cities provided job opportunities to women.
The United States was ill-prepared for the massive influx of immigrants. Immigrants were attracted to cities like moth to a flame with the promise of easily finding employment. New new industry companies practices fierce tactics in order to establish monopolies, controlling an entire type of business. All the while food production to support a massive population was vile and unsanitary. The United States was in need of reform in order to recognize these new problems, consequently towards the beginning of the 20th century reforms came.
Research must be done to review the reduced amenities with the large demand and insufficient supply that it should be reasonable to control immigrants in the country. This can be accomplished when new policies are created to restrict immigrants from flooding Canada. Canada is ranked as the top country in the west that has more reception for immigrants. This is a great achievement but it is definitely out of control due to the large population. A city must be able to handle its population otherwise negative effects such as crime can arise.
