Public health has improved drastically since its establishment in 1848. Back in 1848 when the public health act was first established, the diseases that were most prominent were communicable diseases such as cholera, TB, typhoid, smallpox, malnutrition due to poverty etc. There had been an influenza and typhoid epidemic just four years before the public health was established, and thousands of people lost their lives. The reason why communicable diseases were so prominent back in 1848 was because there was a lack of education and knowledge about bacteria and vaccinations etc. There was also a lot of poverty and a lot of people living on unsanitary streets, experiencing very poor living conditions. It was mostly the people who were unable to work and afford to pay rent who were living on the streets and suffering the most. These people included those who were disabled and of old age etc. There was no health service established and no vaccines or treatments available to help reduce the number of deaths caused by these communicable diseases. These include coronary heart disease, cancers, obesity, alcohol and suicide. The reasons as to why these diseases are killing is because people are now getting too much compared to the too little people had access to back in 1848. For example, not very many people had access to all the fatty foods and fizzy drinks we have access to today which cause heart disease and obesity. People don’t exercise as much today because there are things like public transport and there are more cars today. People today are abusing substances like drugs, tobacco and alcohol, resulting in addictions and death because of these addictions.
