Competency Goal III Competency Goal III is to support social and emotional development and to provide guidance. There are three main areas to succeed in this, the things are self-concept, sociality, and guidance. One focus on Competency Goal III is self-concept. Children’s environments support the development of positive self-concepts.

The process of continued reflection in action research provides for continued progress in counseling. Bjorn and Boulus define action research, “as having a primary purpose of responding to local and practical concerns while producing practical knowledge useful to organizations and communities” (p284). Introduction Developmental psychology makes an attempt to comprehend the types and sources of advancement in children’s cognitive, social, and language acquisition skills. The child development theories put forward by both Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson have had substantial impacts on contemporary child psychology, early childhood education, and play therapy. In this essay, I aim to highlight the contribution of these two theorists in their study of various developmental stages, the differences and similarities in their theories, and their contributions to the theory and practice of play therapy.

The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
The DAP measures “the internal strengths and external supports that influence a youth’s success in school and in life” (The Developmental Assets Profile). Based on the results, the student is given a personalized standards-based curriculum in “a highly personalized school environment” with small classes, “where each student is known, respected, and supported”. (Good Shepherds Services) Each student is assigned an advocate/counselor who provides the student with academic support and youth development opportunities, like internships, to engage the student in learning and develop the skills needed to graduate. Engagement with the program and staff develops the students’ feeling of empowerment connected with having a role and responsibilities.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern. I did not feel that I had a safe place to go at school when things were difficult because no one took time to acknowledge that I was not in the best
