College, the most discussed and controversial topic for hundreds of years. The necessity of college has been discussed in many different countries for hundreds of years in the past and will still be just as controversial in the future. Many have asked why college is important and what it has to offer. William Deresiewicz in the chapter “What is College For?” from the book Excellent Sheep attempts to answer this question by using multiple literary elements to show his audience, which is primarily high schoolers, why college is the only option and is essential to all.

In this society that students live in the only way that they think they know how to tell people’s intelligence is by going to college. By not going to college the students think that they have more of an opportunity to explore the world then other people in college,but some disagree with this opinion and some agree that the source of all opportunity is the person and not their educational level. The educational level for language, math, and science has the student’s country ranked at the bottom because the people in the United States don’t take college seriously, it affects us as a country.
College educations in America are simply not needed. In the US, people everywhere are going homeless because of the student loan debts that they have because the population cannot create enough well-paying jobs. A college education isn’t as valuable as society says it is. When high school seniors choose to not go to college, it frees up so many jobs for people that have college degrees. For example, when a senior in high school goes to college, that can wreck another person’s dream of becoming an accountant, for instance.

I first attended Mankato and just was not a fan, it was too big, and the professors just did not have a lot of time for individual one on one time with the amount of students in the classroom. A lot of people don’t realize the benefits of staying at home, furthering your education close to home, and having a job.
They are those who believe a community college is not the best place to receive a higher education. The belief is that community colleges cannot provide the same level of education as most four year colleges. People who support this belief say that a two year college is too easy and would not make a student become competitive in the job market. At most, four year colleges the first two years are design for the student to take prerequisites that could be attain at a community college and help the student decide which direction or to career path to take.
As long as I can remember, I knew that college was going to be part of my future. That is because I always knew what my family expected out of me. College is not only important to me for the reason of making my parents proud, but for making sure that I create more out of myself, as well. With a higher education, I will have more job opportunities available, potentially be able to earn higher income, and obtain more useful life skills than somebody who does not have a college education.
