With technology comes knowledge, which comes power. In the documentary about North Korea, Kim Jong-un, the supreme leader, takes societies technology away. Without the technology, they must rely on the supreme leaders to relay information back to them. Thus, leading the citizens to believe anything the so-called leader says is true. Meaning that the leaders could and will tell the citizens whatever they please.
The Witches Hammer is a treatise that was written in 1486 and first published in Germany in 1487 on the prosecution of witches. Also named the Malleus Maleficarum, it was written by Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger both of whom were clergy in the Dominican Order. Kramer wrote the book to explain his views on witchcraft and to challenge arguments against the existence of witchcraft. It is believed that Sprenger got involved with the project because Kramer wanted to have more official authority in its background. The preface of the Malleus Maleficarum was a Papal Bull, which is a type of letter issued by a Pope intended to authenticate a publication.
In the way that the civilizations are run the two seem remarkably similar and can be compared to each other quite easily. The state and mentality of the citizens is better in North Korea due to them being given much more freedom in what they want to accomplish throughout their lives. Where the progress of the civilization is concerned one of them advances where the other lacks, meaning that the military power isn’t too great in the fictional civilization but it is quite great in North Korea. From these three points either side can be argued about which one is better, which is right because although something is below standards from one perspective, it can be view upon from a different point of view from which it seems great, which means that neither of these civilizations are better than the
Furthermore, there is another similar dictatorship in North Korea in today’s world. The supreme leader of the country is named Kim Jong-un, and he controls everything that occurs. This is in close relation to El Jefe in Before We Were Free because they both have absolute power over the citizens. Just like in the novel, there are many people in the world that disagree with what Kim Jong-un is doing.
They may all force their peers to have a demanding routine but their freedom is in different matter between the two. North Korea allows love relations and family bonding as to “Anthem” only allows to reproduce an offspring but may not allow for the responsibility of them. In the book everyone is equal and must share their equality among their brothers, while everything is devoted to their dictator in North Korea. As to the way everything is formed in Korea must have it isolated and to benefit for only the country. Meanwhile the book states everything is structured for
North Korea is also unaccepting of differences because of the harsh rules they enforce upon citizens. The enforcements create obedient citizens almost as if it were one big military working for the great leader. Both societies carry ranks as well such as “scholars”, “street sweepers”within Anthem and the rich, poor and successful people in North
Barbara Demick has developed the idea that North Korea “has fallen out of the developed world” by providing several examples of life as analytical ways of thoughts and processes of North Koreans in comparison to other countries
North Koreans believe that as long as they follow their ruler, they will have a happy, full life. They hold large, elaborate celebrations, parades, and children compete in the Mass Games. During parades “as they march past, they cry 'Mansei ' which means "Long Live!"”
Every time the “North” of North Korea is mentioned, my parents get in serious arguments on the issue. As we all have learned at one point in our lives or another, the Korean peninsula was divided into two countries after the Korean War: North and South Korea. The government of North Korea resembled a fascist, pseudo-communist government, while the government of South Korea resembled a modern democratic, capitalist government. For decades, despite its economic failure, North Korea allocated most of the money that it generated into the development of its military, leaving millions of its population emaciated. North Korea has constantly plotted to take over its extremely wealthy neighbor to the south, threatening South Korea whenever it had an opportunity to.
North Koreans speaks the Korean language containing some Chinese words and is the recognized language. The ethnicities of North Korea comprises of 99.8% Koreans and 0.2% Chinese. The religion of NK has a long history impacting religion beliefs of North Koreans. Confucianism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Ch’ŏndogyo, and Christianity are the religions that Koreans have been influenced by. The government does not have a ban on religion in their constitution.
South Koreans live a completely different life to that of their neighbors. The first amendment is protected in South Korea. Although if it is found out that you have fled to South Korea, Kim Jong Un will still punish your family, thus once again giving political, social, and religious freedom consequence. South Koreans have been among the first to take action against North Korea’s policy. South Koreans will send over USB sticks with modern western entertainment, real world news, and other unfiltered material.
As an American, we cannot comprehend the types of laws that are enforced upon North Korean Citizens. A few bizarre controlment rules that I still struggle to comprehend myself are there are only twenty-eight ways North Korean men and women can cut their hair, North Korean Men and Women are not allowed to own a bible or any western literature, and also there are only three channels on tv and you must only watch those. Along with those laws in place, the North Korean government has control over education and news which leads to many growing up to hate other countries besides their own with no reasoning behind their hatred. Our lives along with many others are still being affected by the iron grip of societal norms.
to begin, people in north korea a literally dying in order to gain and transfer information to the people in this government run country if anyone in the country is found with non state-approved information, they are seen as a war criminal and can be charged with hefty fines, imprisonment, or even public execution. “During the 100-day mourning period after kim jong ill’s recent death, the new leader declared that anyone caught using a mobile phone for ‘wrong’ reasons would be tried and punished as a war criminal” (Baek 1). for us here in the united states where we have freedom, this seems crazy that these people in north korea aren't allowed to access basic information, but our government may be doing that to us more than we think. with recent events involving hillary clinton and her
In North Korea everything is controlled by the government. There is no freedom of speech and if someone opposes Kim Il-Sung, they would be executed. Similarly in Animal Farm, any animal that spoke against Napoleon would be called a traitor and then the animal would be executed. In North Korea there were also given the illusion of freedom but they didn’t really have it because they could pick their own president even though there was only one person running. This is similar to Animal Farm because after Napoleon kicked Snowball out of the farm, he declared himself the leader of Animal Farm with no opposition.
The government believes that the people will never know the truth but now or later they will. North Korea has no freedom of movement, religion, information and speech (Doe). It is considered illegal for North Koreans to leave their country unless given permission (Doe). People can’t practice the religion they want they practice the religion that the government constrains them to (Doe). North Korea has no freedom of data, which implies that they should know only what the government permits them to (Doe).
