In the forensic investigation, there were 6 pieces of forensic finding used in Timothy McVeigh trial. The first set of the finding was the earplugs that he wore to silent the noise of the explosive. Meanwhile, there was a trace of residue found in his jean pockets along with two t-shirts and a knife with the sheath. Therefore, due to the positive mixture founded on McVeigh, the prosecutor believe that McVeigh was involved in making a bomb from a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. It was believed after, Timothy McVeigh also participated in placing the barrel of bomb ingredients in the back of the rental Ryder truck.
In 2013, Gabriela Cowperthwaite released her documentary, Blackfish, to establish her argument as to why orcas should not be kept in captivity. Orcas have been kept in captivity at SeaWorld since the mid-60s and have shown aggressive behavior towards trainers. Throughout her documentary, Cowperthwaite creates ethos and pathos appeals through the use of interviews with former SeaWorld trainers as well as showing the change in behavior of Tilikum, an orca that has been kept in captivity since he was two. With the information provided by the interviews and the examples of Tilikum’s behavior, Cowperthwaite emphasizes why orcas should be released from captivity.
The first reason why I think should not be in captivity is of what happens in their tank. The first piece of evidence from the PETA practical “Aquariums and Marine Parks” is that since the tanks for the orcas are usually small for them, they get insane because of the echolocation they use. This makes me think that since their fin sometimes curves, that they would get injured while swimming. In addition, this might make the whale die faster than what they are supposed to live to. Other people might say it might non’t affect it
I believe keeping orcas in captivities is not humane .To keep orcas in a zoo for display is acceptable, but it is morally unacceptable to use them for entertainment at SeaWorld. I saw the film Blackfish and now, I resent SeaWorld. They care more about profit than animal welfare. Keeping these sentient animals in captivity for an extended period of time causes them severe psychological damage, as evidenced by several killer whale attacks on trainers.
It is very common to see collapsed dorsal fins in captive orca males, caused by them being unable to swim in straight lines as they’re imprisoned in an enclosure equivalent to the size of a bathtub to them. Contrary to the lengthy lifespans of wild orcas, the toxic combination of boredom, mistreatment, and stress that captive orcas face leads to early deaths, often by pneumonia. Orcas who gnaw in frustration on the walls or bars of their enclosures face dental issues and possible infections. In 1968, a young male orca was caught in the wild and sent to the Miami Seaquarium, where he was given the name Hugo. Never adjusting to life in his claustrophobic tank, Hugo would routinely and intentionally slam his head into the walls of his tank, even going as far as smashing into the viewing windows.
By abusing orcas and subjecting them to an unnatural environment how else could humans expect the orcas to react? Humans serve as oppressors, forcing the orcas to participate in shows and perform behaviors that they do not naturally perform in the wild. Seeing this poor orca all by itself evokes tremendous sympathy from viewers. Together, the interviews and footage from Blackfish successfully evoke incredible emotion from the viewers.
I believe that SeaWorld should close down because, animals are kept in captivity which is harmful to the orcas. True SeaWorld is a wonderful place to visit, it’s a great place to go and get entertained, but what you might not know is that it is hurting the animals. Keeping the orcas in tanks and cages is very dangerous because when they are let out, their could be very dangerous and can be very grumpy and aggressive. The truth is that the orcas are taken from the pod from the wild and are brought to the SeaWorld. Therefore, when they arrive at SeaWorld, they are expected to make friends with other orcas and become a pod.
Andre Cole Ricardo Acosta G. English 101 September 22, 2015 Do Killer Whales Actually Belong in Captivity? Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
The target audience of this documentary is the general public that includes a big emphasis on the customers of SeaWorld. The filmmakers are trying to inform the public of the inhumane treatment and the conditions that the orcas face while at amusements parks such as SeaWorld. As described in the film, orcas are seen as intellectual animals that are aware of their surroundings. Because of their intellect, orcas don’t belong in a place SeaWorld and should be released.
On top of all of this, they are not being bred naturally. In SeaWorld, Orcas naturally breed at the age of 15, but in SeaWorld they are bred at the age of 8 or 9 (thetoptens). This shows that the company only wants more animals for more shows and more money, even though it is not right. You might be saying, “well they have rehabilitation center inside the parks to help the animals when needed.” This is true, but no matter how much medicine you give them cannot cure their animal nature of wanting to be free in the ocean and stop their sadness of being enclosed.
The breeding of whales in captivity needs to come to an end. It isn’t fair to doom them to a life in captivity. Tank size’s for whales have always been a problem. Killer whales are one of the hardest animals to keep in captivity (Noonan 394). They are very social animals and are constantly moving in the wild and their small pools don’t give them the room that they need.
It’s finally time to stop keeping orcas in captivity because lastly, captive orcas suffer from a wide range of health problems, that not seen among wild orcas. The orcas shallow pools give them ‘vulnerable to higher-than-normal levels of ultraviolet radiation’ from the sun, which is a major risk risk factor for most skin cancers, which breaks down and wrecks their immune systems. In other words, there really isn't anything that the workers or owners at parks can do for the orcas since no matter what, where ever in captivity, the orcas will still be exposed to skin cancer, as a result of the radiation. Collapse of the orcas shark-like dorsal fin is another issue that orcas in captivity are prone to as well. Though it is not harmful, the deformity affects
In particular, animals need to be in their natural environment in order to survive. “In the absence of that, they are permanently stressed to the point where their immune systems are compromised, and they have no defense against the kind of infections that are common to orcas who spend their lives in concrete tanks” (Marino 1). Animals in a human environment can be an endangerment since they are supposed to be adapted to their environment. “Even at the very best of human care and medicine cannot fill the void since, if they are to thrive orcas need ‘orca care’ in an orca environment, not a human one” (Marino 2). Animals used for breeding can be dangerous and result in serious disorders.
Sunburn is a huge problem during summertime. It causes annoying sunburn problem and forces people to find ways to cover it. It is very important to cove oneself from ultraviolet ray. The skin is exposed by UV rays that can cause cancerous tumor. Melanin pigmentation is increased that makes the skin tanned.
Imagine the change they have to go through! That is heart breaking! In conclusion, those are multiple reasons why I believe that Marine Animals should not be held captive! First, captivity causes many health problems for the innocent marine mammals. Second, changing the underwater creature’s natural habitat is very unhealthy for them.
