Final Essay Questions Pure substances are either in the form of compounds or elements. A compound can be decomposed by ordinary chemical means and are made up of two or more elements. An example of a compound is water, which is H2O. Elements, on the other hand, are pure substances that cannot be broken down because they are in their purest form and an example of this would be gold, which is Au. In contrast, mixtures can be made up of homogenous or heterogeneous mixtures that can be separated. In homogeneous mixtures, there is a uniform composition and the components are what make up the mixture. In these mixtures, individual chemicals or ingredients cannot be seen. Things like stainless steel and sugar in water are what are considered as homogeneous mixtures.
