Daniel Ms.Garland English 1 honors 5/15/24 Controlling. How does Ray Bradbury and Shirley Jackson use imagery, setting and simile to demonstrate government control and how it affects perspective? Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, published in 1953 during Global Tension, is a book where the main character is a “fireman” whose job is to burn books and the buildings they are found in.
Fahrenheit 451 is set in a horrible, yet very possible, dystopian world. The setting is very undesirable because everyone thinks that books are bad so they have prohibited all of them. Everyone has this Belief because over time it has been convinced that books only bring sorrow. Most people have forgot about books and their importance, but the people who haven’t forgotten try to sneak books into their homes only to then have their homes burned, sometimes with them in it. Books are valuable, worth the time and effort, and in Montags’ world books are considered dangerous.
You must understand the importance of what books do, so you appreciate and experience what they offer. In Fahrenheit 451, people in the society can’t comprehend what books actual purpose is. When Montag first realizes the significance of books, he has to rethink everything: “There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a women stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing”(Bradbury 48). Almost all the people in the society don’t even think twice about someone dying like that.
The book I chose for my summer reading project was Fahrenheit 451. To people that are too lazy to read it and just want to know what happened, you’re in luck because that’s what I’m going to do. This story takes place in the future, 2053 to be exact. There wasn’t a definite location given but by what clues the book gave me, my guess is it’s around Chicago and St. Louis.
In a future society, books are forbidden and "firemen" responsible for burning the remaining titles. That's the job of one Guy Montag, but he begins to question his role as he gets in contact with a teenager who reads secretly. And he becomes himself a criminal reader of smuggled books. The most surprising thing about Fahrenheit 451 is that it's premise could, in the hands of a lesser writer, easily turn a condescending little lesson about the importance of reading books.
“The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance,” -Socrates. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag enjoys to burn books, but after meeting a girl, Clarisse, who loves book, he begins to question whether burning books is the right thing to do. He learns more about his society is actually doing and decides to stop people from burning books. By exploring Montag’s obedience to society, questioning authority, and outward rebellion we can see how this demonstrates how Montag changes as a result of his conflict within his dystopian society as it connects to Knowledge vs. Ignorance.
Have you ever wanted to be done with reading and never look at a book again? Then you would love life in the city described in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In Montag’s city, books are seen as evil, the government has even changed up some jobs. Today firemen help save people and put out fires, but after the year 2020 they change up the job and start to only burn books. Books are burnt on the spot and inside the house which they are found in, taking the house and everything else with them.
Begin your essay on this line. Reading is something we all need, even if some do not agree with it. Learning about diverse cultures is important and helps expand your cultural knowledge. A notable example of why society needs books is, in the novel Fahrenheit 451, it talks about how all books are banned and if you have one you could potentially get burned or put in jail. Banning books is not something that should happen for the sake of censorship, and it restricts our freedom and impedes children's education that is needed.
Firemen nowadays put out fires and save houses, but in the future, why are they the ones starting them? Books are illegal, having one will get you in a lot of trouble, but having multiple, your house gets burnt down, in these books is knowledge that we as people can use to come up with personal opinions, but without books, we just think what we hear from other people because we don't know any better. When Montag, a fireman, meets this one girl, she changes how he thinks about books. Knowledge is power, and books are illegal. Anyone who is caught with one will get in a lot of trouble, and if more than one, then your house will be burnt down.
Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451 is set in a dystopian world, where books are illegal. In this world firemen start fires instead of putting them out. They burn books for a living and none of them ever questioned their job. The book focuses only on Guy Montag which is one of the firemen.
Wayne Dyer once said, “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don 't know anything about.” In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, ignorance is a common theme portrayed throughout the novel. It sets the impression of how all of the characters feel due to a society that has outlawed books. Guy Montag is a firefighter, whose job is to burn the books. Yet, he often steals them without the chief firefighter, or anyone else knowing.

Some say the most important thing in life is knowledge. In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury the protagonist is Guy Montag, who is a firefighter that burns books. Montag is faced with enormity and the complexity of books for the first time, he is often confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed. At times he is not even aware of why he does things, feeling his hands are acting by themselves. Montag has certain physiological, sociological, and psychological traits that make him so unique.

Dystopian fiction, is a very popular genre, which depicts worlds where society has broken down and generally devalues human beings. There is always a reason to write a dystopian novel. In the modern day world, there are a lot of dystopian fiction writers, for example Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Lois Lowry and etc., but one of the best dystopian fiction writers is Ray Douglas Bradbury. He wrote Fahrenheit 451, one of the most popular dystopian novels ever written. Bradbury was afraid of the technology and was against the mass-media propaganda in the USA, but it all started from the time period he lived in.
