The top priority guiding regulation in NSW is the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.This regulation provides a basic legislative framework for the urban storm water management in NSW,proposes advanced planning for future development including guiding urban land use and environmental protection details. Some other legislation fulfill the details: Water Management Act 2000 is a guideline for water resources (including surface runoff and groundwater and storm water) management in NSW. Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 is a guideline that regulates any act that could damage the environment, including discharge of the pollutants from urban streams. The Local Government Act 1993 is a guideline that requires local councils to manage storm water infrastructure and implement new storm water management plans.
