Reading is an essential part of human life. We use writing as a way of communicating and without it, people would not be able to clearly comprehend what others are thinking and their ideas. As we move along throughout society things change and advance. There are so many more distractions now then there were just 30 years ago. All these distractions are causing kids and teens to focus less on reading and more on how many likes their post gets on Instagram. This lack of focus is causing reading levels to drop drastically. With reading being so important to everyday life it is crucial that we keep younger generations engaged in reading. To prevent the reading levels of our youth from dropping, they need to be engaged in a way where they want to read. Having a common interest could help.

Kids are reading less than ever for their own enjoyment. Alter’s study found (2014) In 1984, 8% of 13 year olds and 9% of 17 year olds said they "never" or "hardly ever" read for pleasure. In 2014, that number had almost tripled, to 22% and 27% as so reports. Not only are children reading less, but parents are also reading to their children less. Grimshaw, Dungworth, McKnight, and Morris (2007) found that if readers access E-book multimedia elements, such as oral narration, definitions, or explanations, student comprehension skills were higher.
