Her characters like Walter and Ruth are forced to live in a cramped house because they don’t have the money to move out. Walter has to work as a chauffeur driving people around all day for a low wage. Just like in that time period when African Americans could not get high paying jobs, this aided in the racial problem because it kept blacks from being able to move into white neighborhoods. Another method used to keep blacks out of White neighborhoods was contract buying. “When selling on contract, the speculator offered the home to a black purchaser for a relatively low downpayment- often several hundred dollars would suffice.
Loraine Hansberry was born in 1930, during the times of segregation and racial issues. Her family purchased a home in the suburbs of Chicago, and find themselves unwelcomed by their white neighbors. The tension boils over and chaos arises resulting in a brick nearly hitting Lorraine Hansberry. This incident leads to the eviction of their home; Carl Hansberry with the help of NAACP takes the white neighborhood to court, claiming their home as a landmark. The case of Hansberry v. Lee resulted in the removal of racially restrictive covenants, later the family’s home was visited by great African American figures.
Her parents were sharecroppers, but they soon divorced, leading to Moody spending most of her childhood trying to help her mother financially and trying her best to also care for her seven younger siblings. Anne Moody and her family lived in a poor and rural area in Mississippi that was encircled by racial discrimination. Moody was raised in poverty and would constantly move houses, leading her to experience the harsh realities of being an African American child. She, at first, never understood why African Americans were treated in a brutal way, but as she grew up, she finally began to realize why they faced these inequalities, discrimination, racism, and injustices. Despite these challenges, Moody still managed to achieve in her academics and become a resilient individual who would soon fight for equality and justice.
Minorities in sitcoms were less portrayed in contrast to an accurate representation of the time period. Ironically, minorities in sitcoms were not always represented by minority actors and actresses. Sometimes makeup was used on a white actor so he could portray an African man. It was not until the 1950’s when African Americans were shown on television. African Americans were often portrayed as crooked people with poor English and less education.
Many black and Latino residents in Los Angeles faced significant discrimination by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) during the 1950’s and 60’s. They received heavy criticism from members of the black community on the accounts of police brutality and unnecessary violence. Blacks did not feel safe in the vicinity of the police force, usually used to detain them, rather than protect them from violence. A quote from Malcolm X explains the situation well: "You’ve got some Gestapo tactics being practiced by the police department in this country against 20 million black people, second class citizens, day in and day out – not only down South but up North.
Both Angelina Weld Grimke and Lorraine Hansberry play key roles in redefining Black theatre. This is done by utilizing means of social resistance and documenting cultural resilience in their works Rachel and A Raisin in the Sun. Though their writing styles differ in characterization plot, and intent, both women’s writings have played monumental parts in redefining Black theatre and the roles of Black women playwright in American theatre. The two plays portrayed stark contrasts of how African Americans internalized racism and means of coping with day to day trials and the way of the world during this time period. Though each play was created nearly 40 years apart, much of the same anguish African Americans experienced in 1920 when Rachel was written prevailed through to 1959 when Hansberry released A Raisin in the Sun.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s of America, discrimination based on race, gender, and ethnicity in immigrants groups like Native American, Chinese, Irish, and African American is justified through personal and social beliefs, customs, and culture in the growing social structure for a bigger and better America. Native White Americans feared beliefs, customs, and cultures of the Native American, Chinese, Irish, and African American related to lack of understanding and communication problems. The lack of understanding and communication efforts add fire to an already discriminated social structure creating conflict rather than resolving issues. Lorraine Hansberry was the first African-American and the youngest woman to win the New York Drama Critics Award. But that doesn’t mean that she didn’t sacrifice things to become one of the best writers in history. When she was 8 years old, she moved to a white neighborhood and the people would attack them and their home. “ During litigation, white neighbors continually harassed the Hansberry family; in one incident, a brick thrown through their living room window barely missed Hansberry’s head” (209). Her father was a successful Chicago real estate broker so he took them to court.
In 1915, many segregation ordinances were in effect for cities such as Baltimore, Louisville, Richmond, Norfolk, Greenville, S.C., and many other cities also experienced this, and some of these segregation ordinances have been upheld in local state courts. Segregation ordinances were primarily put in place to separate two races blacks and whites. However, the African-Americans were the ones getting treated poorly, they were segregated from public spaces and politics. They did not have access to healthcare, education, and housing was scarce at the time. This has been going on for centuries hence Jews and the Germans, but segregation ordinances in the cities were there to preserve peace between two races, blacks and whites.
From our readings, segregation is usually associated with race, but there are other forms of segregation such as residential and economic discrimination. Segregation impacts access and use of health care services by usually putting up barriers to limit individuals based on socioeconomic status and the negative environments in which they live in, worsens their health and safety. Being restricted to access health care, increase certain behaviors and environmental factors leading to higher levels of health problems. Residential segregation, for example, discriminates individuals by income and housing conditions. The segregation of schools based on a students skin color was in place until 1954. On May 17th of that year, during the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education, it was declared that separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. However, before this, the segregation of schools was a common practice throughout the country. In the 1950s there were many differences in the way that black public schools and white public schools were treated with very few similarities. The differences between the black and white schools encouraged racism which made the amount of discrimination against blacks even greater.

It will also clear up superstitions about the disorder, and provide safe alternative treatment options for people, before it’s too late.
Public Policy on Housing Discrimination Executive Summary Housing discrimination and segregation have long been present in the American society (Lamb and Wilk). The ideals of public housing and home buying have always been intertwined with the social and political transformation of America, especially in terms of segregation and inequality of capital and race (Wyly, Ponder and Nettking). Nevertheless, the recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri and in Baltimore due to alleged police misconduct resulting to deaths of black men brought light on the impoverished conditions in urban counties in America (Lemons). This brings questions to the effectiveness of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in devising more fair-housing facilities (Jost).
Discrimination/Treatment by White people Discrimination started when the European settlers Began colonizing America. Discrimination in America has tained its background because it created a tense relationship between Blacks and Whites, which prevented Black from reaching equal opportunities. In the 1930s discrimination was very popular. People divided themselves into two groups the whites and the blacks.

This is the physical separation of two or more groups into different neighborhoods, or a form of segregation that “sorts population groups into various neighborhoods contexts and shapes the living environment at the neighborhood level. In addition, we will discuss a health disparity, which is defined as inequalities that exist when members of certain population groups do not benefit from the same health status as other groups. Racial residential segregation is a fundamental cause of racial disparities in health.
