Title and Author Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer Plot Summary Oskar Schell is a nine-year-old boy who lost his father in the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. Oskar has been looking for some closure, ever since that day. After finding a key in his father’s closet, he sets off on a journey looking for the lock. Along the journey, he is reminded of times with his father. He finds many new relationships along the way, including his grandfather, his mother, and Mr. Black. He even finds people who are also dealing with loss, like his mother’s friend, Ron. Although Oskar discovers these new people and new relationships, his only hope is to find closure. This shows that Grandma is very loving and wise. Throughout the story she shares he feelings and stories of when she was growing up. These stories all lead up to the lesson she is trying to teach Oskar. Memorable Quotes “I’m so afraid of losing something I love that I refuse to love anything” (216). Tomas Schell Sr. Grandma is trying to teach Oskar to show compassion and love. This quote shows that Tomas Schell Sr. is ashamed that he hasn’t loved or showed compassion. Tomas hid from the world and now cannot find closure with his son because of not loving and showing compassion. “All of the sudden, I understood why, when Mom asked where I was going and I said ‘Out’ she didn’t ask any more questions. She didn’t have to because she knew” (291). Oskar This quote is very important to the theme of the story. This is when Oskar realizes his mom knows about the journey he has been on the past weeks.
