Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald is a well-known author from the 1920’s. He became a very iconic person after his death due to his famous novels such as, The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night. F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to be one of the most influential authors in American literature. Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in the state of Minnesota. Instead of calling him Francis, he was called “Scott.” As a child he lived in Buffalo, New York. (biography.com) While growing up, he learned that he had an “unusual intelligence.” (Wikipedia.com) He started to write and publish his own works in the school paper. During his time there, he met Zelda Sayre at a country club. Later, the two fell in love. After the war, Fitzgerald moved to New York City with dreams of beginning a career in advertising. (pbs.org) Later on, Fitzgerald would write This Side of Paradise, this novel would be a jump start to his writing career. After the novel being published, Fitzgerald finally started to earn a good income to provide for his girlfriend Zelda. After a numerous marriage proposals, Zelda finally accepted. The two got married in the famous Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on April 3, 1920. (Biography.com) Zelda was Fitzgerald’s inspiration in his literary works. In later years the couple would have one child, Francis Scott “Scottie” Fitzgerald. In 1932 Zelda had a mental breakdown that she never really recovered from. After struggling with the pain of dealing with Zelda’s mental breakdown, Fitzgerald went on a downward spiral. He became an “incurable alcoholic.” (Britannica.com) In October of 1939 Fitzgerald would begin to write a novel called “The Last Tycoon.” Things started to look up for Fitzgerald after suffering with alcoholism and losing his wife to a mental illness.
