According to our text, Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing, Alfred Edmond Jr., the author of “Why Asking for a Job Applicant’s Facebook Password is Fair Game,” is a senior vice president and multimedia editor at Black Enterprise. Which is the company that oversees the publishing of Black Enterprise Magazine where this essay appears. Black Enterprise Magazine publishes articles spanning a variety of business related topics and it is directed towards African American businessmen and entrepreneurs. In Edmond’s essay he argues that businesses should be allowed to ask potential employees for their Facebook password, and he does so from the viewpoint of the business and not the potential employee.

He states that having access to potential employee’s Facebook would make it easier to identify if they have a history of misconduct with minors. He uses New York City as an example, claiming that misconduct with minors is becoming a widespread problem there. He compares this to running a credit check on potential employees of occupations that deal with finances. Claiming that snuffing out any potential issues with employees should be done during the hiring phase and that it’s more important for the business owner to prevent problems for the company or school than the rights of the potential employee’s privacy.
In this second third of the essay Edmond is appealing to the reader’s logos and their pathos again as well. He appeals to their logos by trying to get them to reason on why it is beneficial for the employers to be able to do it.
