The child labor was a huge problem in the United State. They would children doing dangerous jobs, some children would even die from doing these chores. The 1890s there were about 1 million 10 - 15 years olds who worked, that number had doubled by 1910. Industries even hired 5 and 6 year olds to work 18 hours a day. Along with this there were health conditions like miners inhaling stuff from the mines, glassworker exposed to intense heat and clam breakers would have cut on their hands from the tough shells.
The textile factories were an unsafe and unheathly place for working class families to work. These factories were unsafe for children to work because the factories would over work the children, give them a insuffient diet and the factories were filled with diseases. For example a testimony from Joesph Hebergram to the Sadler committee he said; ‘i have damged lunges. my lgs muscles do not function properly and will not support the weight of my bones... the doctor told me that it was caused by dust in the factory, from being over worked and a insufficient diet.
“Child labor and poverty are inevitably bound together and if you continue to use the labor of children as the treatment for the social disease of poverty, you will have both poverty and child labor to the end of time” (Grace Abbott). The issue of child labor has been around for centuries. Its standing in our world has been irrevocably stained in our history and unfortunately, our present. Many great minds have assessed this horrific issue and its effect on our homes, societies, and ultimately, our world.
The amount of time most adults worked was beyond unhealthy, but, what made it worse was that kids as young as nine were sent into the mill to work 6 1/2 hours. This was from Document G as Document G also described that adults were working more than 12 hours a day in warm, and damp air in the factories. Being in warm and damp conditions for half of a day every day is beyond miserable for the body physically and mentally. Many sicknesses were passed as a result from this which resulted in many deaths. It was clear that the health of most adults were detoriating, but it was still ultimately decided to put kids to work like adults even though children generally are not as healthy as adults.
This next document shows the negative side of children working in the factories "This shows the ugly side of child labor, Lack of safety features/unsafe working conditions, the children working are very young they are obviously not in school/lack of education” (Document8). In this document they talk about how children working in these factories don’t get a good education, they do not have enough time to attend school. It also shows how they are very easily injured from working in these harsh conditions. Not only was there unequal pay for women, boys, and girls, but there was
As the rate of industrialization in America grew during the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, child labor became more and more common. The rapid growth of the economy and the vast amounts of poor immigrants during the Industrial Age in America justified the work of children as young as the age of three. By 1900, over two million children were employed. However, the risks of involving child labor greatly outweighed the positives; child labor was inhumane, cruel, and caused physical deformities among children. Children typically worked in coal mines, mills, and factories which contained many life-threatening hazards.
There were so many job opportunities, children began to fill in those positions. However, even though there were children working at these factories, the conditions that they had to work in did not get any better. Due to these conditions, there were many serious injuries that were obtained, not only by adults but a large number of children. Not only were they illnesses but they were physical injuries.
The Industrial Revolution created factories for businesses to grow and produce consumer goods. The factories hired many child workers and had them work in dangerous working conditions. Many people, usually inspectors and reporters, had noticed the troubled and hazardous state that many small children were working in. They’ve contributed to the recognition of the dangerous working conditions to the Parliament. This later resulted in the Parliament granting factory workers, the Factory Acts, and the School Sites Acts.
This can lead to severe illness, like lung problems, and it can even result in death. According to Lewis Hine’s report, “… two breaker boys of 15 years… fell or were carried by the coal down into the car below. One was badly burned and the other was smothered to death” (Doc B). This reveals the dangers and harsh realities of child labor. It shows how children were badly injured and sometimes even killed.
An examples child labor is the children working the tobacco field were they have to were trash bags to protect themselves. Another one are kids working in the coal mines were they get all dirty and a lot of their backs hurt because they have bend down the entire time. Child labor is a cruel and bad thing to do because in some states there are laws about it and you could go to jail so it is better that you don 't do it. The only reason that I chose this one to get $300,000 instead of $600,000 because the food is something that we need and with out the food safety then no one would know about it. They would have to keep all the exits clear give clean water and have bathroom
Working conditions for children were frequently hazardous and unsanitary. As seen in document 2, the working conditions for these children in the factories were deplorable. They were filthy, dusty, and cramped, making them an unsuitable environment for children to spend so much time in every day. When forced to work in these factories, children faced numerous health issues, and some even died. Child labor began to decline as the labor and reform movements grew and labor standards in general improved, giving working people and other social reformers more political clout to demand legislation regulating child labor.
Factories were not the most sanitary places to work especially for an innocent and fragile child. Children were exposed to many different illnesses while working in factories. They worked for such long hours without any proper ventilation. There were minimal breaks but very long shifts. In factories, many fatal accidents took place involving children.
Child labor is something people in the United States might think of as awful, but for families in countries like China it is a way of life. Name brand companies, for example Nike, have their products made overseas often using children to do the work. The use of child labor in other countries for Nike brings up the debate on whether or not the United States should buy products that have been produced by children. The United States should not buy products manufactured with the use of child labor because of the unfair wages they get paid and bad working conditions. Some may argue that by putting children to work it is lowering the unemployment rates in countries, the morals of buying products produced by young teenagers is just flat out wrong.
In the process, they expose themselves to particles that can lead to lung-related illnesses, and risk getting beaten or exploited financially.” (“Is Your Cell Phone Powered by Child Labor?”). III.Poverty in the Dominican Republic of Congo leads to child labor in mines A.Background information on the Dominican Republic of Congo’s resources. 1.The DRC has enough precious mining materials to make itself rich and ensure the wellbeing of its population. Despite all of their resources, the country is facing poverty.
But not all work done by children should be accepted as child labor. In other words, if a work doesn’t harm child’s health or personal development (educational issues), it is generally accepted as something positive and useful. Such activities develop children’s skills, provide experience and formulate them to be part of society. The term “Child Labor” is when children do work that damages their health or hamper mental or physical
