Imagine being in a world where you wouldn’t see kids act out in stores for a toy or a product they want, wherever you go. You may wonder why they act this way? Well it’s because of advertisers. Advertisers target children because they know that they will beg and whine and do anything to get that new hot wheels set or that giant model of a Barbie dream house they have always wanted. Companies set products at high prices because they pay celebrities to endorse their products in order to draw their targets in. Advertisers also pitch their products on the internet to reach children easily, because kids spend most of their time online. In the articles “Facts about marketing children” and “Marketing to kids gets more savvy with new technologies”, the authors say that kids spend 1 to 6.5 hours a day on the internet playing games, watching YouTube, and doing other activities on different sites they visit. In “Facts about marketing children” in the section ‘Beyond the Tube’, the Kaiser family foundation says “the youth are multitasking their way through a wide variety of electronic media daily, juggling iPods and instant messaging with tv and cell phones. They pack in 8.5 hours of of media exposure into 6.5 hours each day, seven days a week.” Advertisers are making their way into children’s life more easily because kids spend most of their time on it. To prove this statement, the article written by the organization, The Center for a New American Dream, “Facts about marketing to children”, in the section “New Dream Poll, ‘nag factor’”, the authors say that most kids buy certain items because their friends, or certain celebrities they like, have them, so they feel pressured to buy items to make themselves fit in. In the text, it says “more than half of the children that surveyed said that buying certain product makes them feel better about themselves.” So people can have major influence on children because they are the most gullible and companies take advantage of that. Also in the Nag Factor, the text states that “Children 12 to 17 will ask their parents for products they have seen advertised an average of nine times until the parents finally give in. More than 10% of 12 to 13 years olds admitted to asking their parents more than 5 times for products they have seen advertised.” Kids and some teens are advertised to because advertisers know what kids at this age want.
