Fahrenheit 451: The Impact of Technology
In the dystopian society that Fahrenheit 451 takes place in technology is everywhere, it’s everything. The parlors replaced any true interaction with people or living things. This society uses machines to distract themselves from their own emptiness. The lack of human interaction and the violence seen on the parlors managed to desensitize the people. When technology holds too much power over a society the people become empty. In the society of Fahrenheit 451 the common person is empty and emotionless, like technology itself.

According to the novel, there are about 9 suicides a night. This proves that society, as a whole, is unhappy. Maybe in this society’s past they looked to nature to find emotional relief, but now that relief comes from technology. Technology became an emotional outlet for the people, because of that they became attached to it. The character Mildred, who was a characterization of society, show how the average person in this dystopia lives. Mildred felt more attached to the soap opera The Family than her husband. Technology is always around the people, they distract themselves with it. It’s mentioned that nobody sleeps well, even this can be tied to technology. At night one is stuck with their own thought, but in this society people don’t have their thoughts, so they take pills. These pills make them sleep until they can distract themselves with technology again. This attachment to technology can change how people feel, making them lack emotion.
