Faith In Young Goodman Brown

In the short story "Young Goodman Brown," the author really grabs the reader's attention with some confusion and hope. The author Nathaniel Hawthorne leads the reader into being confused at first and making them wonder what all he is saying really means. Hawthorne grabs the attention of the reader with the confusion and the hope to find out what will happen next. The short story "Young Goodman Brown" is mainly defined as a suspenseful story yet the story expressed a great amount of symbolism with many lessons for the reader to take in. The author expresses that having faith is very important asset for both men and women and the ones without faith will face problems that can break you as a person. Once you lose faith you begin to lose everything around you.

Throughout the forest Goodman Brown’s faith has been tested over and over as he has came across the dark figures telling him to come with him and Goodman Brown stayed true to his faith. Goodman Brown tells the dark figure “having kept my covenant by meeting thee here, it is my purpose now to return when I came. I have scruples, touching the matter thou worst of”. The scruples and purpose both are relating to him staying true to his faith. The dark figure continues on telling Goodman about all the evil acts he has performed and Goodman replies to him saying how it would break his wife little heart and that he would rather break his own. The author again shows the reader more symbolism with using the name Faith to show his faith and shows the reader that he would rather die than lose his faith.
