The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful and largest empires of the ancient world. They took control of places from Asia Minor to Northern Africa, Spain, and Britain. They slowly fell for many different reasons. The main reasons that Rome fell were Political corruption, Excessive Military Spending, and Barbarian Invasions A significant reason that Rome fell was that there was a lot of corruption in the Roman government. “For the next hundred years, most emperors were the commanders of whichever frontier army could seize power.”(Social Studies textbook 10.5 A Weakening Empire). This evidence shows that there was a large amount of political corruption. “Roman emperor Septimus Severus died in Britain in the year 235 CE. His dying advice to his sons was, “Make the soldiers rich and don’t bother about the rest.” That guiding principle weakened the empire and helped lead to its end.”(Social Studies textbook 10.5 A Weakening Empire) This shows that the government favored the army over the people. This means that they spent too much on the army. Also it states “that guiding principle weakened the empire and helped lead to its end”. That shows that excessive military spending was a key problem in the collapse of the Roman Empire. “Maintaining the army to defend the borders of the empire was costly Military spending left few resources available for other vital activities like public housing or maintaining roads” (Ten Theories on the Fall of Rome) This shows that since the government spent a lot of time and money on the army the public activities were put to rest.
