People in America used the American Dream to fuel their ambitions, and in some cases, make changes to create a future that would make the forerunners of their family proud. The American dream is just a figment of the imagination, as it has been proven time and time again to bias the exclusive hopes and dreams of already successful or privileged people. The American Dream serves as a representation of what America has desired and attempted to achieve, but has become a catalyst for unintended racism. The American Dream doesn’t exist in our society, there isn’t space for Americans or people who want to prosper in our nation of freedom and opportunity to blossom as they want to. The American Dream is now a fallacy that people plan and intend to follow, but are unfortunately left to suffer as their pursuits become little or even meaningless. The pursuit of a never-ending goal is what the American Dream has changed to be, the effort is futile and results in almost no benefits. This is presented in I am Not Proof of the American Dream, which states “The architecture of my life was defined by money, meaning its absence, right down to the alarm blaring at 3:40 a.m. The night shift paid a dollar more, $6.35 an hour instead of $5.35.” (Westover). This quote is representative of the fact that pursuits for advancement in society are taken just for there to be no change, which is worth noting as measured by the apparent disappointment present in Westover’s interpretation of the American Dream.
