Identity continually evolves throughout life, molded by ongoing interactions, and self-discovery and how you appear or act. In the third grade, I told everyone I brought an egg to school to convince my peers I was a farmer. I had no better motive but for it being fun to give people false identities since I'd disappear by the end of the year. I believe that Gatsby is a phony due to his manipulated identity, insincere motivations and involvement in illegal activities after reading the “Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Firstly, Gatsby is a phony because of the false front he created to fit into the upper class society of the time. This quote provides evidence of Gatsby's admission of fabricating his background to support his false identity. Another example would be when Jordan and two other girls were gossiping about Gatsby when Jordan dropped something new about him. Huddled up, Jordan revealed “It’s more that he was a German spy during the war.” (Fitzgerald 44). Despite this statement not being evidently solid, the fact that there is so much speculation around Gatsby underscores the idea that people know Gatsby’s true self is hidden behind his wealth and mystery. Additionally, Gatsby runs off of insincere motivations to impress. In chapter 5, Gatsby shows Daisy around his lavish home, reuniting following years spent apart. Fitzgerald writes, “He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes” (Fitzgerald 91). This shows that Gatsby’s sole interest is to impress Daisy with his possessions, rather than genuine love and connection. This is prevalent throughout the entire book from Gatsby.
