What would your ideal life look like? The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is narrated by Nick Carraway as he tells the story of when he met a man named Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is living a luxurious life, despite where he came from, but there’s only one thing in this world that he desires; Daisy, the woman he loved in the past. The theme of the Great Gatsby is love, wealth, lies and deceit. This theme is portrayed rather well throughout the book. Love, however, would have to be the most vital theme over wealth, lies and deceit. First, the love Jay Gatz had for Daisy Buchanan is what drove him to become the well-known “Jay Gatsby.” Gatsby fell in love with Daisy when they were younger, but believed the reason she didn’t marry him was because he wasn’t rich so he became just that, rich. For example, “It was a strange coincidence,’ I said. ‘But it wasn’t a coincidence at all.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.” (Fitzgerald 83). Gatsby has lied about his whole life; about where he grew up, where he got his money, and what he does for a living. For example, “It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it.’ ‘I thought you inherited your money’ ‘I did, old sport,’ he said automatically, ‘but I lost most of it in the big panic- the panic of the war.” Gatsby was being dishonest about his money and when he was caught, he panicked and said the first thing that came to mind. There’s no reason for his lies about where he truly came from because new money will always be new money.
