Suggestibility- false memory is when a person recalls a memory that never actually occurred. False memories are normal occurrences. Have it ever occurred to you that sometimes when you walk past a person and see them clearly for a split second. Once the person is out of sight, when you try to recall what color bag that person carried. You may think that it was blue and then you self-doubt yourself and say no, it was green and then you may create a new false memory where your remembrance of event can become unreliable. This happens to us regularly. After studying about this in class, when I went home, I decided that I should try it on someone. I chose to test this concept because I believe that it is such a big thing that we cannot fully rely on our own memories. While I was testing this concept on my friend, I had slightly expected her to say that “no, Hunny this never occurred” and “we never went to café.” Nevertheless, I anticipated more that she would buy my story and agree on going to the café. That is exactly what happened. When, I told her that this was a false memory that I was trying to create she did not believe me. She said that we did went to the café and when we were returning there was lot of traffic. Then, I explained to her the whole concept of suggestibility- false memory and the real story that happened. She remembered the true story. I think I will use this concept to understand whether the memory I possess is true or false. Did an event actually occurred or am I just creating things up.
