The book “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates” talks about two young kids that has same name, lives in the same neighborhood, but has different destinies. The author Wes mother Joy was a single mother, as the other Wes mother Mary was a single mother by different circumstances. Also, an essential play roll at the book is that both mothers wants to give their child education and be successful for the future. Both Wes’s are going in the same path of getting into trouble and being rebels. They are acting unreasonably and taking the wrong decisions that would affect them self in the future.
Author Lewis Carroll once said, “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” Throughout Jamie Ford’s novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, the reader can see that once the past is brought up, more conflict occurs. As the characters in the book interact with one another, each of them change in different ways. Ford creatively includes unique struggles throughout the family and friends surrounding Henry in order to show growth. This novel helps shape Henry’s character by exploring many conflicts that push Henry to face his problems and learn from them.
A difference in self-identity often causes conflict between individuals. Head cook at weddings and Funerals by Vi Plotnikoff demonstrates how differences in beliefs, values, future plans and different opinions can cause conflict between a family, community or individuals. Beliefs and values often differ between people, just as Marusa and Aunt Florence. Murusa is considered a perfect girl, she came from a profoundly traditional Doukhobor family. Marisa 's mother, Aunt Florence was a fairly traditional as well as having strong ties to the Doukhobor community.
Jamie Ford's Hotel on the Corner of Bitter Sweet is a historical fiction novel that takes place during the Japanese Internment of 1942. It centers n Henry Lee, a Chinese boy living with traditional Chinese parents and trying to grow up as a typical American kid in the U.S. during World War II. When he befriends a Japanese girl in the midst of the conflict, Henry soon discovers that navigating between the borders of cultures comes with many obstacles. The novel is a painful yet beautiful commentary of the racial separation in those times, capturing the struggles of both Japanese and Chinese Americans, along with a small look into African American’s lives as well. It tells the story of the horrible camps through the eyes of a young Chinese boy, which is an interesting perspective.
The book Mosquitoland is about a troublesome young teenage girl who has a lot of family issues and was written by David Arnold. It was written in first person point of view by a sixteen year old named Mary Iris Malone or Mim Malone for short. The book starts off with Mary living with her father and new stepmother after her parent’s divorce. As a teenager, these major life changes do affect your behavior and emotions big time! Shortly after her parents split, Mim finds out that her mother is sick.
This book is a major example of how certain decisions can affect one’s life. Both Wes’ had similar lives, yet they ended up in different paths. There are few factors why they ended up having different paths and those factors are; parental support and figures, the environment style, and the social influences. In The Other Wes Moore, family ties are very strong and both families of the two boys had certain expectations for them, but one family more than the other.
Right now, think. Think about how the relationships effect people 's life. Relationships between friends, parents, siblings, your boyfriend/girlfriend, co-workers are all important. Are people ignored? Are people talking too much?
Scott Monks introduces the reader to his book about boys and gangs, growing up in an area where it is a norm to be in a gang and leadership in a gang. Introducton: The story of the book, Boyz “r “us deals with Mitchel, (Mitch) and gangs in the 1990’s in Marrickville, an inner suburb of Sydney. The toughness of boys growing up in extreme circumstances, poverty, one parent families, dysfunctional families. Juvenile delinquencies of boys and siblings, assaults and wilful damage.
In Rot & Ruin, the author uses the theme of family being important. Here is a example of the theme from the book “He barely liked his family-and by family he meant his older brother. Tom.” The conflict is that Benny and Tom do not have a good relationship and have grudges against each other. If you hold grudges against your family or do not have a good relationship with your family, you will have no one to fall back on and you will be by yourself.
This memoir is about Jeannette Walls, telling her life story about how she grew up. Her family, her environment, and how it all turned out for her. It was based in the mid 1900’s and it starts off with Jeannette being a grown woman. Then she goes into what happened to her throughout her childhood, and how it all affected her.
The modern day family lives behind a dark cloak made up of secrets and lies. There is the wife left with physical and mental bruises inflicted upon her by a “loving” husband. Next door, there is a child hiding in the closet, avoiding their parents emotionally charged civil war. Across the street, the family of three is sitting at the dinner table with a plate meant for a mother who left ages ago. A few blocks down, there is a young man lying on his bed, contemplating weather his parents would notice him missing.
A House Divided Yet United In Sarah Vowell's "Shooting Dad" she describes how different she and her dad are. Anything either came across, they handled it a different way and believed in different things. While the two do not have a very good relationship. However, despite the vast differences between Vowell and her dad, it was this opposition against each other that made them similar.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels explore the various types of relationships which different social classes involved themselves in throughout the 1900s. Although characters attempt to surround themselves with people of different societies and classes, many of those relationships fail due to the high contrasts between the various characters. In both novels, marriage includes much more than just love; wealth, social class, family, and land are key components in choosing a significant other. Instead of the conflict of the story being between a husband and wife, the conflict is between a mother and a daughter. In the beginning of the story, we can see the obvious conflict between the two. The mother is what one might consider to be strict or abusive or maybe even just tough love. Many times, throughout the story, the mother is said to have hit or choked her daughter. Because of this, the daughter has turned into a disobedient girl and will do anything to go against the wishes of her mother.
For some of my family the search for individuality is an ongoing process. In fact, my family and the family in “Everyday Use” share similarities and differences when it comes to actions of young people, the treatment of children, and relationships between family members. Firstly, the young people in my family and in the short story share similarities and differences when it comes to our actions. Dee, known as Wangero, and I have some similarities.
