What are the major influences one may have in the 21st century? The 21st century has brought many ideas and influences that have never had any significant impact on society in the past. Family Guy’s influence was planted well before being created with the mass production of the television and rapid development of the internet. The popularity of Family Guy has benefitted by the revolutionary advancements in television and the internet. Television and internet are in almost everyone’s life “Television and the Internet are the main forms of mass media. Family Guy is said to have “managed to poke fun at every race, color, creed, interest group, political affiliation, and even the disabled” (Ricke 120). Family Guy has managed to provide negative information towards everyone, but does that language influence the viewer in a negative way? The types of derogatory language in Family Guy vary in form and origin from sexist comment to homophobic speech. The research from Ricke and her team concluded that “over a season, viewers are subject to roughly 16 derogatory remarks per hour. Based on an 18-show season (a standard television season), this would mean that audiences hear 144 instances of derogatory language per season” (Ricke 131). Family Guy represents an enormous amount of derogatory language in its show but does this affect the viewer? Society in the 21st century has grown accustomed to using derogatory in everyday scenarios. Ricke concluded “ these types of derogatory messages have already become so commonplace in current society that they have essentially lost some of their negative connotations” (Ricke 132). The evidence against television shows that display derogatory images and language is broken and unable to be blamed for influencing viewers on such actions.
