My uncle, who is my father’s older brother, and my deceased aunt’s younger sibling, has detached himself from the family and the reason why I say this is because we have not seen him ever since my grandfather passed on. He is married with two boys who I was very close to until my uncle lost contact with us. The wife my uncle married to a Zulu woman, who my grandmother was not very fond of. I recently found out that he has two older kids who are my cousins, who I have known for a long time, for me it was quite shocking and I was upset about it because I used to be really close with my uncle. Due to my uncle distancing himself from the family, it caused my grandmother pain and my dad because they all grew up together in the same household and my grandmother taught him values which were all forgotten. My extended family in Port Elizabeth has also been rather scarce because the last time we saw them was at my grandfather’s funeral. The one thing I have realized is the fact that my family, when they are faced with a situation, the suppress it and it always comes back to haunt them, as the child of the family is it not my place to be involved in this kind of conflict because I don’t know the other side of the story. Another possible weakness in family therapy from my perspective as a client is that, I might want something different from to what my parents or grandparent wants. For example, I want to marry a white or Indian male in the near future, because I want to explore the cross culture experience, my grandmother strongly disagreed with me on the basis that, in the past, she has had bad experiences with people from different ethnic groups and she is trying to protect me and my side of the story is that I have had a lot of white and Indian friends and I have never been treated badly by any of the.
