“The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” a quote by Jack London, expresses the thought that people aren’t born to just float through life with no purpose they are meant to live life to the fullest. I agree with the words of Jack London because I believe that people’s main point in life is to be courageous and to face your fears head on with an open mind. This connects with extreme sports because it shows that extreme athletes risk their lives to do such life threatening things because they don’t want to do nothing with their lives, they want to do things that make them feel good, and to some people jumping off cliffs gives them that sense of confidence.

One person may think that the rewards of accomplishing something as dangerous as wingsuit flying or climbing Mt. Everest aren’t worth the dangers, some find a sense of tranquility. In the article “Why Do People Crave The Experience?” Frank Farley a psychologist from the University of Massachusetts explains that “not everybody goes on scary rides like roller coasters, or comes back a second time if they try it.” Some people just don’t crave the adventure or the thrill of living a life full of risk.
A lot of people may believe that the reason people choose to include themselves in extreme sports is because of the adrenaline rush but in a study done by Eric Brymer he found that not only do they do extreme sports for a completely different reasons, but he also saw that these people are very focused, calm and hardworking people.
Some people may argue that risking your life isn’t worth the meer feeling of achievement. There is no telling what can happen when doing extreme sports no matter how experienced, as in the article “A Solemn Warning to Wingsuit Flyers” which talk about the qualified mechanical engineer, Geoffrey Robson, who died at age thirty-one while trying to fly through the ridge of a mountain called the Devil’s Tooth.
