FATE IN ROMEO AND JULIET
When we are told we were meant to do something, people usually act one of two ways. We either aspire to be what was laid out for us, or like Romeo and Juliet, we decide to make our own fate. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, a play where the characters meet, fall in love, and then take their own lives. The characters in the play Are members from one of two families (excluding Lawrence and Paris), the Capulets or the Montagues. these families have been at each others throats for an unknown reason since any of them can remember. Romeo subverted what he was made to do when he came to this party, as he was not invited. Shakespeare pg. 50 line 80 states, "...and if you be not the house of Montagues, I pray, come and crush a cup of wine" Romeo chose his own fate when he did this, meeting Juliet and flirting his way into her mind. His being at the party angered Tybalt greatly however. This planted the seed for his heated duels later on in the play. Romeo showed imitative, and a wish for something longer after he subverted what he was told to do. Romeo violates his banishment in act 5, scene 1 after learning of his wife's death. Shakespeare pg. 272 says, " well, Juliet, I will lie with thee to-night. Let's see through the means." This quote shows Romeo's final challenge to his fate. His determination to see if Juliet's fate was true, and, if it was, commit suicide. Not only would he be violating the terms of his banishment by doing this, but he would also in his families eyes be dying for their sworn enemies' daughter.
