Women And Their Education in Ottoman Modernization Era: Fatma Aliye and Her Intellectual Contributions Efe ?nan?r ABSTRACT This paper will deal with the women and their education in the Ottoman society. The paper begins with the circumstances of women and their education before the Ottoman modernization era, and then it will focus on the Tanzimat Era until the Young Turk Revolution. The government?s efforts on modernizing the society through education and establishing new institutions for women will be revealed. The paper focuses on the prominent feminist and the first woman novelist Fatma Aliye, and her intellectual contributions to the place of women in society, feminism and more importantly on education. It than examines Aliye?s novel ?Refet?, which is about an unfortunate girl who saw education as the only path to liberation. The paper concludes with overall deductions. ?Hayr?nnas minyenfe?n nas? While Aliye was from a elite family, Mithat, an independent man, was of a lower white collar class family.
